I got a cheap VB-601 for a know working Slot1 PIII500. I actually put the
power supply cable in basackwards. I didn't think it would fit. I didn't
push very hard. But it went in...I Fired it up and *snap*, something
popped. I unplugged and redid the power supply cable to the mobo and it
fires up. OK...I'm in the bios making a few changes, detecting HD and such.
I save and restart and nothing....Fans run and HD spins but that's all.
Resetting the CMOS switch seems to have no effect.

Why did it even start in the first place?

Oops, sorry to hear that. It may have held together just long enough to
come up once... the pop may have been a cap, a resistor, or it could have
been an IC. Hope the CPU didn't buy it. Lessons sometimes are hard to
learn.

Thanks Robert. I am wondering if the CPU is dead. Considering that the
machine started up once makes me think just the board died. A pop/snap sound
that loud, well I can't imagine a CPU starting up after that. I don't have
either components to test against to see. The mobo can still be had for
$16. The memory is working fine in another machine. Do you think it's
worth it to get another board?

VIA C3 processor on FIC KA31 motherboard ??? - Has anyone tried the VIA C3 processor (on a slocket) on a KA31 motherboard? I think I know where I can get my hands on an 800MHz processor for a reasonable price and wonder if it's worth trying. Maybe the BIOS doesn't support the processor - I don't..

The "highest" videos crads VA503+'s can use? - Hi there (again), So, after all these years, have the video card limits for a VA503+ been worked out?
