Post subject: Building a new system
Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard>gigabyte (more info?)

I have been chugging along with my old P3 550 for a while now and need
something new.

I finally have then funds to build a complete new system and would like to
get some opinions.

A strange place to start but I bought myself a Canopus ADVC 100 (while it
was in stock) and an Antec Plus 1080 AMG case today, now to fill it.

This is what I was thinking;

Gigabyte 8KNXP - not the Ultra version.
P4 2.8C
2 x 512 MB ram (Brand? - this is where I will need advice)
ATI 9600 Pro.
Pioneer A06 DVD -/+ R
Liteon 52x52x24 CDRW
Liteon DVD Rom
Seagate 120 MB SATA HDD.

There is good chance someone out there is running something similar and was
wondering what their experience's were like.

tia,

Phil

Sure I'm running something somewhat similar and I have a bunch of thoughts.
Here's what I've got:

Gigabyte GA-8SQ800 -not ultra
P4 2.4B
2x 512MB ram PC3200 Corsair
ATI 9700 Pro
Yamaha USB CRW3200UXZ (24x/10x/48x)
Generic 16x DVD-ROM
Generic 4x/16x DVD+RW
Maxtor 80GB/7200RPM/8MB Cache, UltraATA/133

That's a nice board, taking advantage of some nice features while leaving
out the SCSI. Good choice. It's also got DualBIOS (a great feature which
would have saved my other GA-8SQ800 if I had it......only available in ultra
version of my board)

 > P4 2.8C

That's pushing it. The 800MHz processors are very hard to overclock in the
first place, and the increased multiplier on the 2.8 just makes it harder.
I'd recommend going down a bit, at least 2.6. That'll save you some money,
and you should be able to get it up to at least 3GHz. My 2.4GHz is running
at 2.95GHz.

 > 2 x 512 MB ram (Brand? - this is where I will need advice)

I'd recommend Corsair. They aren't the most popular brand, so the prices are
a bit cheaper, yet the memory they sell is high quality. Make sure you get
the right speed too! This is a DualChannel DDR400 board, So get two sticks
of DDR400 (PC3200) and you'll be running perfectly at 800MHz.

 > ATI 9600 Pro.

Not a bad choice. Balance between price and quality.

 > Pioneer A06 DVD -/+ R

I'd recommend going up do RW. Also, I'd recommend only getting the +RW. A
+/- is pushing it, because -Rs are, IMNSHO, pointless. The +Rs burn much
faster and are generally compatible with DVD-ROMs and DVD Players. They run
about the same price too. Officially, -Rs are the compatible ones, but +Rs
work just as well.

 > Liteon 52x52x24 CDRW

If I'm not mistaken that's written wrong. I thought it was write
speed/rewrite speed/read speed?? Well, whatever, that's a good "ultra speed"
drive. It's also a good idea to get this CDRW because the DVD drive will
probably write slower to CDs than CD burners.

 > Liteon DVD Rom

16x I'm assuming? I figure this is so you can copy DVDs on the fly? Good
idea

 > Seagate 120 MB SATA HDD.

Nice and fast.

I've told you as much experience as I can give you. The CPU might be a bit
fast and you could spend money elsewhere (maybe move up to the Radeon 9700
Pro). The SATA drive also takes advantage of the SATA port freeing up IDE
drives for CDROM, etc. I wasn't particularily estatic over Gigabyte's
onboard audio, I'd recommend going out and buying a PCI sound card. I've
already stated my ideas on your DVD burner. Otherwise I think you made some
pretty good choices.

The Gigabyte 8KNXP has been awarded best quality/value i875P motherboard by
several top-rated reviewers on the net. But you may also look for Asus
P4P800 Deluxe, and Abit IS7-G, with i865PE chipset, which are PAT enabled,
and also very well reviewed.

First, do not neglect the power supply! With all the stuffs you're willing
to fit in your Antec, you need at least 400W. Try to get something as quiet
as possible, or your computer is going to drive you loudly nuts!!!...

Second, pick good quality DDR. Check the warranty and the return possibility
in case of incompatibility with your motherboard.

Third, if you can find Radeon 9500pro 128Mo Sapphire or Hercules, or 9700
not pro, if they are still in stock, they are better quality/value than
9600pro, and also DirectX 9 compliant.

Fourth, if you're looking for a DVD burner, look around for NEC ND-1300A,
which is DVD+/-R & DVD+/-RW (4x,2.4x,4x,2x,16x) at very affordable price. It
can also burn CD and read DVD. Maybe you can spare the extra Lite-On CD
Burner (you can find 52x32x52x now), or DVD reader, if you're not aiming at
the ultimate DVD & Video-Editing machine!!!... Or you can wait September to
buy the new 8x DVD burners.

Hope this helps...

M.

My system:
GA-8IK1100 (8KNXP without RAID) / Intel Pentium IV 2.4C (FSB 800) / 2*256Mo
Cas 2.5 dual channel Winbond DDR: experiencing stability issues with DDR (I
think) and trying to solve them...
Lite-On 52x24x52x : excellent Burner... You can't go wrong with Lite-On!
Radeon 9500pro 128Mo: excellent 2D & 3D image quality... (2020 score at
3DMark2003)
