All,
I have posted this problem before, and had some feedback, but no joy on a
resolution....
I built a pc for my kids suing kit that was out of my old box. Once built
all seemed fine, I installed XP pro....set up accounts etc, then tried
installing SP1 from cd.
It is then that I noticed that the cdrom seemed to 'die' after trying to
access files on the disc. I swapped the disc for a differant disc, and
still the same issue.
I then swapped the molex supplies, swapped drives, then changed ribbons,
then changed controller, then master/slave etc....all to no avail.
The cdrom seemed to 'lack power' to drive itself?
So, yesterday, I swapped the box out again, it is now a 350watt supply, so
power surely would not be an issue?
Or, is it memory...The machine in question only has approx 148meg of pc133
on it. Other hardware includes a PIII 550, 20gig HDD, Compaq cdrom,
creative live sound, gforce mx440...
Any help or ideas on getting this problem fixed would be greatly
appreciated.

350W is plenty for that system. You say you've swapped drives - i.e. you've
tried a known-working cdrom drive? Or you swapped the same drive to a
different position? It sounds like the drive is faulty to me.

Sorry mate, swapped for a brand new, working drive!
Any ideas?

Hmm, nothing specific, you've tried all the obvious stuff. Long shots, if
you haven't tried them already - flash your bios to the latest version,
update your ide drivers to the latest, disable dma for the cdrom.
You could also get hold of a knoppix cd - if you boot from the knoppix cd
and linux doesn't display similar behaviour, then at least you know for sure
it's some weird software problem in windows.

Hi
I would hazzard a guess and say it's your memory. Stick another 128MB in for
about £15-£20 uk to test. XP needs a lot of memory (512MB +) to work well
anyways. I'm using 156MB of 512MB total as I type! )

TRy installing motherboard chipset drivers. Could be a DMA issue.

Just thinking, what version of windows was on it before you "rebuilt"
it for the kids. If it were windows 95, some of the cd roms of that
era will not work with 98 or newer operating systems

Umm, I've got a server running XP Pro with two old 2x CD-ROMs in it and they
work perfectly.

Did you look into Conners suggestion about mobo chipset drivers? And check
that the drive is running in DMA mode?

Would that be in the bios somewhere?

That's not what was meant by mobo chipset drivers. Go to your mobo
manufacturers page and there should be a download for chipset (or mobo, or
IDE) drivers for download. Or they'll be on the CD that came with your
PC/mobo if you have it. Might need updating for XP if it's an older board so
downloading is probably the way to go. These are installed from within
Windows, different to a BIOS flash.

Control panel, system, hardware tab, device manager. Click the plus sign
next to IDE controllers, right-click the channel you want, click propeties,
then advanced settings. Make sure all devices have 'DMA if available' in
'transfer mode'. Exit out then go back and see if it's changed. Check 'em
all while you're there.
Luck,
