I am interested in buying Nero 6 Ultra Edition for my Sony PC with Samsung
CD-RW drive.

What is the difference between the OEM and retail versions? Is it necessary
to buy the OEM version with a new PC?

Thanks in advance.

The OEM version is typically locked into the firmware ID for a
specific drive. Sometimes it will work for other drives from the same
manufacturer, but beyond that, it won't work for other drives.

There's also no box, and sometimes, no paper manual.

The OEM software is bundled with the drive, and I presume bundled with
your PC BECAUSE you opted for a CD burner in it. It's going to be
very hard to opt out of it because the company that assembled your
computer isn't going to have any other use for it otherwise. Even if
the OEM license allowed them to, or if they didn't care about it, the
store wouldn't be able to turn around and sell the software under the
table to someone else because of the hard coded restriction.

I don't know if anyone's ever successfully requested a refund for the
software from the manufacturer.

The OEM version is supplied with DRIVES, and other than in very rare
cases, you cannot buy the OEM version, nor would you want to!

Unlike many (say) Microsoft OEM products (which only cut the cost),
pretty well every OEM CD burning program is feature crippled - in the
case of Nero, this means eith the loss of a few relatively minor
features (eg. crossfade), or a morte restricted version that supports
the "Express" mode ONLY.

If you have an older/OEM version, you can get the UPGRADE price

But compare with any discounts available directly from other suppliers
- dealing direct with Ahead is not always the cheapest, especially if
you want a boxed version where their upgrade discount is minimal!
