Post subject: CTRL-F1 not working
Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard>gigabyte (more info?)

Hi Gigabyte mb experts,

I'm in the process of finalizing the install of my first Gigabyte
board, a P35-DS4 (rev. 2). I basically got it up and running under Win
XP Pro using an E6850 CPU, a ATI 2900 Pro video card, a 350GB HDD and
an LG DVD drive. All powered by an Antec 650W PS.

I did notice that the <CTRL>-F1 function doesn't work for me in the
BIOS. (It's the function that is supposed to bring up additional
options for tweaking mb settings).
While I'm not ready to overclock at this time I may want to in the
future. So I'd like to have that working before my option to RMA this
board expires.

Since I can't see this being a hardware issue because when I hit
<CTRL-F1> the very bottom line in the BIOS main menu flickers
indicating that it did receive this command from the keyboard (I tried
2 different keyboards!). And to rule out a BIOS issue, I upgraded the
original F6 with the latest F7 BIOS.
Now I wonder if some other settings in the BIOS affects this option?
It would make sense that if I selected a predefined setting like
'Turbo', it might block additional tweaking options. But deselecting
that made no difference.

Does anyone have any clue as to what might be causing this?

Today I also noticed that I am not getting any sound out of the board
- not even the Windows startup jingle plays. But that's an issue for
another day - one step at a time Wink

Thanks for any hints you experts can give me to resolve this ...

Tom, I just built a system with this same board and I'm loving it! I don't
use the onboard sound so I can't help you there.

My Spec's are: P35-DS4 Rev. 2.0
Q6600 GO Stepping
2-Gig CORSAIR Dominator DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500)
PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750W Quad
ATI X1900XTX MSI Version Video Card
HT Omega ClaroPlus+ Sound Card

I'm still learning how Gigabyte does things too! But so far it beats the
heck out of my ASUS boards.

Tim

Never mind folks - I just found out I had that all along.

I was expecting a new window to open up when I press CTRL-F1, but
instead it just added another selection to the BIOS main menu. It's
the M.I.T. line which I had all along!
The manual is a bit confusing in this respect since it shows that line
already being present before any comments about added tweaking
options. So I naturally assumed it being part of the basic menu.

Oh well, as I said - it's my first Gigabyte board and I'm in the
learning phase. But I wasted 2 days on this - aaargh!!

Thanks anyway!

Hi Tim,

Yeah - I love the board as well.
1 item bugged me a bit while doing the physical installs - the PCI-e
video card blocking the memory clips.
But I noticed the same blockage on mb's of other mfgrs as well and
once the memory is installed and working one hopefully doesn't have to
worry about that too often. I got Crucial's PC2-8500 Ballistix memory
which should keep me happy for a long time;-)

I thought long and hard trying to decide between the Q6600 and the
E6850. The 6850 won out because of limited software support for 4
cores presently.

This is also my first use of a SATA DVD drive and I was surprised to
find no connector for separate audio cables on that drive.

Have fun - I know I am despite the minor (I hope) hangups!
