On my screen, when I zoom and depress the button half-way I get a flashing
icon in the lower right corner. It is red, looks like a lobster. It occurs
about 90% of the time when I try and do a zoom shot (auto mode).

Can someone enlighten me as to what is going on?

(Sometimes the picture comes out okay and sometimes it doesn't)

Mel

Read your camera's user guide.

You can download an advanced User guide
http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=SupportIndexAct

Select your camera from the dropdowns.

Direct link to A630
http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&tabact=S...ortDeta

Click on Drivers and Downloads:

Download this file.
PSA640_630CUGad-EN.pdf
PowerShot A640/A630 Camera User Guide Camera User Guide Advanced

Look on page 15 of the pdf file (actual page 13)
Information displayed on the LCD monitor.

I suspect it is the (Red) Camera Shake Warning.
