A couple of months ago when in Thailand the lenses wouldn't close with a
msg e18. So I took it to Canon and they said it would need new lenses
complete for about US$200. Went to another repair shop and they fixed
it for $20 in two hours; however, afterwards did feel a vibration
whenever the lenses opened or closed. I asked if there was moisture
inside and was told there was not. Now while taking Halloween pics it
has again failed. It has never been dropped or knocked around, and
since the first instance have been very careful ensuring the lenses are
completely closed before re-opening, plus it's kept in it's case, so
relatively dust free.
Question if this is a common occurrence with Canon? Also with other
brands with this type of sliding lens mechanism, and if so which are the
best ones avoiding this; or perhaps I should say which are the worst?
Is it possible to have it repaired in the USA at a reasonable price
without replacing the entire lens mechanism, or is replacement a given?
Any hints on repair service in SF Bay Area would be appreciated.
