Changing Hardware On XP Pro

On my xp pro machine I have added a hard drive and a cd burner.
What I want to do is remove the cd burner and install a dvd rom cdrw combo
drive.
I'm familiar with the process on how to do this but I am not sure if xp pro
will allow me to change this drive out and still believe it is installed on
the same machine.
I've heard but have no confirmation that if you change 3 hardware items xp
will not boot, and requires reinstall and reauthorization.
Does anyone know if this is factual?
