There was an unpack procedure that worked around some of those problems.
Alas, I have problems both with an x850 and 5900XT so mainly, Civ4 is just
buggy garbage...

Download the latest patch. It addresses any ATI issues. I don't think it is
as much the game though, as it is the ATI drivers.

I'm playing it just fine on a 9800Pro. The problems seemed to center
on people with the newer 256mb cards. As someone posted, unpacking the
art file solved this as did the first patch.

Great game by the way, it's been keeping me up many nights.

weird there is so much ATI hostility/problems on the boards
How does one unpack the art file?
Is it much better than Civ IV?

I've just picked up this game from the bargain bin. It fails frequently in
the game with VPU recover errors. I've applied all the latest ATI drivers
and game patches. Has this problem ever been resolved and how?

Video card is a Sapphire X1300 Pro with 256Mb in a DELL 5150 dual core
Pentium D 820 2.8GHz with 1.5Gb DDR2 memory.
