Cleaning a CD-ROM , CD-RW, or DVD Drive ?

Is this something that a reasonably intelligent person can do without buying
a retail "kit" for ?

I'm hesitant to buy a retail kit because I already have cleaning materials
on hand for camera optics and also various electrical/lectronics cleaners; I
probably already have the raw materials.

But aside from opening the case and vacuuming out the dust bunnies, and
perhaps swabbing the optics with a lens cleaner, what else is there to clean
? Or, more to the point, is there anything inside a CD Drive that SHOULDN'T
be touched ?
