I presently have a Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 ST3300831AS 300GB 7200 RPM
Serial ATA150 Hard Drive as my primary HD. I want to install a second
HD for file, picture and music backup. What would be a compatible
second HD from Seagate minimum 350 GB?

Thanks,

Tom

At the interface level (which is where we'd be checking for
compatibility), the interfaces on drives run at 1.5Gb/sec or
3.0Gb/sec. The new drives negotiate automatically, and if the
motherboard port does not support the 3Gb/sec cable signal rate,
the drive uses 1.5Gbit/sec instead.

There are a limited number of motherboard chipsets, that can
upset that feature a bit.

If you have any trouble getting the drive recognized, there
is a position for a jumper on the drive, which will force
the drive to operate at the slower (1.5Gbit/sec) rate.

Other than that, SATA drives are as interchangeable as IDE
drives, so the brand or capacity are purely a financial
decision.

To power the drive, you need the right power connector.
Some drives have 1x4 Molex disk drive power connectors, and
some use the SATA wafer style power connector. Adapters
are available, to help with older power supplies.

It doesn't even matter if it's a Seagate drive so long as it's a SATA
drive.....and size doesn't matter either

There's no such thing as a compatible HDD to Seagate.

Any Seagate SATA HD you can find!

Even SATA2 will work, but at the slower speed of your SATA bus. This page lays
them out:

I have used just about every major HD combination for second and first
drives and never had any problems so it most likely could be any brand
you like.
