I have just ordered the Sapphire Radeon X800 GTO2, which if you read
carefully between the lines has been subtly suggested can have the
BIOS unlocked to open up the full 16 pipelines, and then be
overclocked to X850 XT and even PE levels.
And so the question is, can the stock cooler on this card handle the
extra heat created? It is a single slot cooler, and if my memory
serves me rightly, so are a lot of the X850 XT solutions, but they do
seem to have a larger fan/heatsink implementation. Should I be looking
to fit a 3rd party dual slot cooler, and more to the point, are there
any available for this cars yet? I know it is a pretty new card.

Correct. And it's the only reason to pay a premium over the "standard" GTO.
Some newer GTO2 cards reportedly ship with the full 16 pipes already
unlocked, according to the forums on NCIX.

Try the stock cooler first. If the card heats up too much, get an Arctic
Cooling or Zalman cooler; both are ~ $30. The best indicator for overheating
is not temperature; it's visual artifacts. Once you flash the card BIOS, use
ATiTool to check for artifacts and adjust clock speed accordingly.

My X850 XT can get up to over 60 degrees celsius w/the stock, two-slot
cooler and the fan screaming away at its highest setting. Of course, I'm
running my x850XT overclocked at 580 core, 591 memory. As long as you're not
planning on doing a LOT of overclocking the stock one slot cooling solution
would probably work for your X800 GTO2 (although I thought the unlockable
X800 was called the X800 GTO ^2, that's squared).

That is the same card, thanks for your thoughts.
I will probably be opening up the pipelines (interestingly, the site I
bought the card from has a link to the "how to open up the X800 GTO
^2", even though it will invalidate the warranty) and overclocking the
card, tho I doubt I will try to take it up to XT PE levels of
performance. I will be happy enough with XT levels if I can get them.

I am guessing that it ships with a thermometer already built in. Any
thoughts as to what constitutes "too hot"?

Is the X800 GTO ^2 a PCIe only vid-card? I didn't even look for one of those
when I went to ebay to get my X850XT. How much did you pay for it?

If you find out what "too hot" is make sure to post it here. Like I said
I've had my X850XT up to 60 degrees celsius and it seemed not to have any
problems. You might want to be careful with ATITool. When I used ATITool it
tried to clock my X850XT up to a core speed of 600Mhz, which locked up the
system hard.

As far as I am aware, it is a PCIe only card. Mine came to £140 ish.

X850XT.
