Post subject: DVD-ROM drive hangs with dual-layer DVDs
Archived from groups: comp>sys>ibm>pc>hardware>cd-rom (more info?)

I have a new box (Medion Titanium MD 8083 XL) with a DVD-ROM drive that
shows up in the device manager as "IDE DVD-ROM 16X". Today I've put a
DVD in it and it hung up my Windows. At this state the eject button does
not open the tray. I used a paper clip to eject the disk and Windows
became responsive again. If the dual-layer DVD is still in at startup, I
get a "DISK BOOT FAILURE" (in the BIOS setup the primary boot drive is
my HDD-0 and every other boot source is disabled).

The above does not happen with single-layer DVDs or DVD-ROM. I am not
completely sure if the problem comes with dual-layer DVDs but I guess so
because I tried with some full-featured DVDs and they all caused the
described behavior. Also, with a DVD from a two DVD pack the first disk
gave trouble but the second was ok.

I guess this is a defective drive and I should call Medion about it. Am
I missing something?

Any help will be appreciated.

I have had the same problem and contacted Medion helpline but they
seemed to as puzzled as myself by the problem but could not offer any
explanation or advice to me. I am not sure if the DVD`s were dual
layer or not but I will check. I see it has been a while since you
posted on this and wonder had you made any progress or got any reason
for the problem. My PC hangs when I put in the DVD and I have to
switch off the power and use a paper clip to remove the DVD, if I
leave it in the DVD drive my PC will not boot.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
