Hi

I got myself a NEC 1300 DVD writer, it works well apart from one thing.
It will not write to CDRWs for some strange reason. I updated the
firmware, but still not luck.
Not a huge problem, as I got a CD writer, which is faster anyway and I
do not burn CDRWs much these days anyway.
But just wondering if any one else have had the same problems.
BTW, that is using Nero and Easy CD creator 6, I suppose it could be
that the software I am using is older than the drive, but then why would
it burn to DVD r and RW, +and - and CDR?

My mate got himself a Optorite something or other and have the same
problem, is it a normal DVd writer problem?

Thanks for any help

Ive got one too and love it. The NEC that is.

Ill try the CDRW. I dont really care about CDRWs though - dont use
them much. The DVD-RW does work though Ive only used packet writing
with it. Idont like to use non-packet writing with CDRWs or any
rewritable - blanking the whole disk seemed to always give me problems
with CDRWs no mattter what writer I used. FOr me CDRWs = pain in the
ASS period ! I hate them.

So since my long line of CDRW drives from Liteons to Richos and HPs
all had CDRW problems I wouldnt be surprised that the NEC has problems
too.

I think it is great, and considering the price I gave for it it is even
more value for money.

I will be grateful, Thanks

Do not talk to me about CD writers.
I had a Yamaha Scsi CDRW drive, 6 speed, but it worked well. It lasted
for over 4 years. Then I decided to go for a faster drive and EIDE.
What a mistake in two years I have had, 4 Lite on, one Ricoh and they
all failed on me after a few months. I now got a LG which seem to be ok,
but I will wait and see.

This is the reason why I am not to bothered about CDRWs not working on
the NEC as the LG copes with them ok.
But it was just the fact that my DVd writer have problems with them and
my mate do so also, even as his is a different make.

Apart from the problems with the Drives dying, I have had no real
problem with using CDRW disks, I use packet writing as well, Nero In-CD
being my choice. But I swap data with another mate of mine and his
computer do not like reading disks that was wrote with In Cd, drag to
disk or any packet writing software, even if we put the reader software
in the computer./
Very strange

Anyway, thanks for the reply.

I was talking about CDRW disks . My writers have been fine.
Geez - thats surprising youve had such bad luck with them. My Liteons
have been great.

From 24x on Ive had Liteons - 32x 48x and 52x.

NEC 1300a bought a few months ago. 1.08 firmware.
System 1700 AMD xp in a NFORCE2 ASUS a7n8x deluxe board
1 gig mem. The ATAPI drives are on the first controller NOT the add on
controller - I always have problems when I put them on extra
controllers - ABIT highpoint or ASUS promise or recently a Promise add
on PCI controller card.

Ive got a DVD NEC master/Liteon 52x CDRW slave.

Used a really really old CDRW Compusa (generic) brand I had laying
around 4x. I must have gotten it a year or more ago. Had some old
progs EZCD 3.5 so you can see how old it was. Packet written.

I used Nero 6.0 latest version to blank it - whole disk full erase 25
min. Then I burned 4 files on it with NERO. No problems at any stage
- Im shocked. Ticked verify data. All is well. I tried reading it with
file manager - files look OK.

Yes, I realized that, but I thought I would share my writers bad luck
story Smile

I know, my brother got 3 liteons, my mate got a lite on and they are all
more than two years old.
At least my LG seems to be working ok

40x was the slowest, the LG is a 52, not that it would ever get up to
that speed.

I was going to get the Asus, but the store ran out of them, so I got the
Abit NF7-s instead a good little board, toped with the Athlon 2500XP it
runs like a dream and so stable.
This is the must stable computer I have had, apart from my old Soyo
400Mhz machine.

1gig? That is a fair bit of memory.

Is there much advantage in going over the 512Mb with XP?

Mine is on the first controllers as the second lot is serial.

Mine is master, with a small 1.2Gb drive as the slave

Thank you, I got no idea why mine do not work then, I will have to send
an email to NEC I think.
It may not just like the Packard Bell disks, (do not ask) I got no idea
who makes them.

We tried one of my PB disks on my mates Optorite and it worked, so his
disks do nto work with his drive, but mine do.
I will borrow one of his disks when I next see him, to try on mine.

Thanks for the help anyway.

I always tended to be bit miserly on mem thinking you didnt really
need THAT much for non-specialized uses like video.

I got an extra DDR 3200 stick in prep for a 2500 Barton which I want
to OC to 3200. I ordered another one today - another 512 DDR 3200
because Ive found 1 gig makes a BIG difference for me.

Im surprised. A lot of everyday uses Ive always had problems with work
so much smoother I cant believe it. It seems to give me a lot more
overheard , leeway in burning and doing other things and transeferring
large amounts of data back and forth from my hard drives and other
things. I noticed I didnt really have a lot of free mem left with 512
which Ive used for ages.

I tend to move a lot of data around from HD to HD and to CDRs and
DVDs.

I use PowerDesk for a file manager util. That would constantly bog
down and crash with large amounts of files - more than 800 in a
directory. When I moved large amounts of data it would hang and crash
my Powerr Desk 80% of the time which I thought I had to live with. I
thought it was because PD hadnt been that updated since a few years
ago. But the 1 gig made all the difference. Hardly ever freezes or
bogs down. Large transfers go so much smoother etc.

I really recommend it for people who any level above very light users.
If it makes this much difference just doing this Im sure itll make a
big difference when I get into video editing again. I might even buy
more for that if it makes a difference.
