My Epox 8kha+ motherboard has finally died (blown/leaking capacitors)
after almost 5 years of good use. I would like to re-use my CPU
(AthlonXP2600), RAM (2-512 sticks of DDR PC3200) and new-ish AGP video
card with a new motherboard.
I also would like to avoid having to re-format my hard drives, if I can.
I was hoping to replace with a new 8kha+ off of Ebay, but I didn't win
the auction.
So, is there a logical replacement path for me to follow? Is there
another Epox (or other mfr) motherboard which would meet my criteria?
Or better yet, does someone know a source who's still selling new 8kha+'s?
Thanks! >> Stay informed about: Dead 8kha+ - Replacement Path? |

Yeah, get a http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813123233 .
With support for 400 mhz FSB you 2600 will be faster than ever.

Dave,
Thanks for the tip. That board looks to be a good fit for my components.
However, just to clarify about my CPU -- If I recall correctly, there
were two versions of the AthlonXP2600. One supported a faster FSB speed
than the other. The one that I have supports the slower FSB speed (333,
I think?). So, will the EP-8RDA3+Pro mobo support my CPU?
Thanks!

You can get a refurbished 8kha+ from Epox's online store,
www.epoxstore.com. Price is 25.95 plus shipping. "LIMITED 90 DAYS
WARRANTY, OBSOLETE ITEM/REFURBISHED with new capacitors." is a quote
from their web site. I bought a refurbished 8RDA3AI from them with no
problems; I was replacing an 8RDA+ that I had already RMA'ed once
before; when the replacement failed, I decided to get something newer.
I have a XP2500+ (Barton) which is rated 333 fsb but runs 400 with no
probems. A 2600 is, I think, rated at 266 fsb, but I wouldn't be
surprised if it could go much faster. The RDA bios can run at any clock
speed you want.
If you're running Windows XP, it probably won't like it when you change
motherboards and chip sets.
good luck,

Hey -- Thanks for that tip about the availability of a refurbished
8kha+! That seems like the safest (and cheapest) way for me to go!

OK -- I'm expecting my replacement 8Kha+ to be delivered tomorrow. Is
there anything that I need to be aware of before installing the replacement?
I figure that it should just pop in, re-hook up all components and the
thing should boot up and run fine, right?
Am I missing anything?

Set the jumper plugs to match the old board, put the pci cards in the
same slots, and don't forget to configure the bios.

It's also called "Cmos setup". If you don't know what that is then you
should probably have someone more knowledgable about computers do it. When
the computer first boots, you push the del key and all of the motherboard
options become available. You need to write down all the settings from the
old board to transfer to the new one. You should also clear the cmos on the
new board before installing.

The BIOS or CMOS can be accessed by hitting the delete key after
powering up your pc. It's a menu system that configures the motherboard.
It's all in the manual; if you don't have one, you can download it from
epox. Most settings that you need are already set as the defaults; if
you can't boot up your old motherboard to get the settings, the bios
has 2 choices to try: load fail-safe (for when you're really having
problems) and load optimized defaults, which is a good starting point.
Good luck

Well, I do understand what CMOS is and how to access it. The problem
was that the old motherboard wouldn't boot at all, so I doubt that I
could have gotten to the CMOS to record its settings.
I went ahead anyway and popped in the replacement motherboard, being
careful that all boards went into the same slots as before and that all
jumper settings were the same. The only CMOS adjustment that I made
when booting it up was to disable onboard sounds (since I use a soundcard).
The only error message that I got when booting the replacement mobo was
related to a RAM stick not being seated properly. I re-seated it and
the system seems to be working just fine now.
BTW -- After looking closely at the old mobo, the capacitors were REALLY
shot. -- Bulging and rusting. I'm surprised that it ran for as long as
it did.
Thanks for all your help. >> Stay informed about: Dead 8kha+ - Replacement Path? |

Good job. Yeah, if you can't boot the old board then you can't get into
cmos. So you just have to wing it! The rust on the caps is not rust. It's
the electrolite leaking out. My 8RDA+ did the same thing. Fortunately I
have a lot of electronics experience and I was able to replace all the
defective caps. But it was not a job for the layman, I'll tell you. I have
another 8RDA+ that also has bad caps but as of today it continues to run
just fine.
