I have a PE 6650 with a single 1.4GHz CPU. Dell quoted me $1499 for a
second processor! Surely, I don't need to pay that much but I've been told
that you have to be careful when adding a 2nd processor to make sure they'll
work. The architecture should be the same. Can I not purchase any Intel
Xeon1.4GHz/512KB and have it work? Thanks.

Maybe. That's about as good an answer as you're going to get. Try to get a
(non-dell) CPU that you can return if it doesn't work in your system.

Try a Dell group if you want a detailed answer, or Intel also, but
the 2 processors must be Identical(i.e. the SAME stepping).
