Let me start by thanking any knowledgeable overclockers with this
processor and motherboard who can help.
I've scoured these newsgroups for a while and there are lots of
discussions about this or that but can some one just tell me what
settings to change and what to change them to?
Here is my system:
stock E6600 @ 2.4 GHz.
P5W DH Deluxe motherboard.
Stock 2GB C4 Corsair XMS PC6400 / DDR2 800 RAM w/ SPD disabled w/ 4 4
4 12 2T at 2.1V.
Can I get specific settings to get to 2.8GHz and 3.0GHz and 3.2GHz and
3.4GHz and 3.6GHz?
Many others who search these posts will find your answers and be as
greatful as I.
Once again, many thanks. >> Stay informed about: Detailed Overclock Settings for E6600 in P5W DH Deluxe? |

It is probably better that you understand the simple rules of overclocking
rather than asking for specific settings; particularly since different CPUs
of the same model may require different settings to overclock. There is no
'one size fits all'. One of the attractions of overclocking is that you
have to figure it out for yourself. If you try overclocking and then have
SPECIFIC questions, I am sure you will find a lot of help here.
Basically, overclocking an Intel CPU (except for the Core 2 Extreme
versions) consists of
1. In small steps, increase the FSB speed and test for stability using
TAT or Orthos after each increase. Each time the system passes the
stability test, increase the FSB speed. (Unlink the memory clock from the
CPU clock and run the memory at its stock specificatiions.)
2. When you reach the point of stability, increase the CPU core voltage
slightly (small steps, perhaps 0.01 volts); in NO CASE increase the CPU core
voltage above 1.45 volts (less is safer, more is likley to instantly destroy
your CPU.
3. Keep the CPU as cool as possible - trading temperature margin for
speed margin is part of overclocking.
It may not be possible to get your particular CPU to operate in a stable
manner at 3.6 GHz or even 3.4 GHz. Water cooling may help, but the
additional cost may not be worth the performance increase. If you are not
interested in the learning about CPUs and overclocking, then you should just
try for a reasonable overclock level and stick with the Intel stock, retail,
boxed heatsink/fan.

Phil, what settings does one typically change to achieve this memory
unlinking?
I'm using an Asus P5B-Plus, and running successfully at 2.67 GHz with a
6420, but I started by underclocking my memory so the increases in FSB
didn't take the memory above spec.
TIA for any suggestions. >> Stay informed about: Detailed Overclock Settings for E6600 in P5W DH Deluxe? |

My e6600 will do 3.2ghz and is very stable there. My particular CPU does not
respond to raising vcore at all. All I get is extra heat but no extra
stability to go higher. I guess I got lucky in some respects, but unlucky in
the fact that I just can't get higher even with liquid cooling. My FSB is at
1424. Memory DDR2 @ 833. I am using an Nvidia 680i (Asus P5N32-E-SLI). That
may get you in the ballpark with your MB since I am not familiar with the OC
settings on that particular board.

I may be able to help a little. Usually you will have Linked, Unlinked and
Auto as memory settings. If you choose Linked, you will usually have
dividers like 3:2, 5:3 or maybe even "Synched". If you have Unlinked as a
choice you can manually set your memory speed. Not all boards have all
settings available. Asus usually has a fairly good OC'ing bios. Phil and I
both used the NV 680i chipsets on our Core 2 Duo projects which may have
very different settings than an Intel chipset board. If you only have Linked
memory then what you are doing would be the way to do it. I find that
Unlinked is the easiest way to go so that I can just manually set my memory
to a safe and reliable speed and find my CPU's max and then start on seeing
how far my memory will go.

Thanks, Ed!
I've determined that on the P5B-Plus the memory cannot be unlinked from CPU
clock, so I'm sticking with the current plan, as you suggest.
I'm at 2.72 GHz, still using the Intel HSF. I'm not looking forward to
replacing the HSF and dealing with the push-pins again >> Stay informed about: Detailed Overclock Settings for E6600 in P5W DH Deluxe? |

No problem. It looks like you are on the right track. I have a feeling that
since your memory cannot be unlinked that it will be your limiting factor on
how high you can get. If you can find any settings that can get your memory
to run as close to stock speeds as possible it would help.
