My old system used SoundBlaster and MIDI worked fine last time I tried it.
I assembled a new machine in July. Intel D101ggc motherboard, 512 Meg,
XP Pro SP2. The onboard sound works fine for normal playback of WEB audio,
etc.
Installed a demo of Cakewalk and it won't allow me to select I/O devices. It
shows MIDI Manager as an output device, but will not allow me to select it.
Using the onboard audio with latest version of the RealTek drivers installed
from the Intel website. Device manager does not show any MIDI devices and I
don't see any option to install MIDI devides either on the Intel CD or the
RealTek utilities.
Do the RealTek dirvers not support MIDI devices, or am I doing something
wrong/dumb?

Check the bios menu for enable/disable audio device

Enabled. DVDs, etc. play fine, just no sign of MIDI virtual devices.

What does what you wrote above mean?
DID you go back and check your bios for MIDI?
It is not a matter of whether audio in general works, it's a
matter of going back now and checking your bios. There is
often more than one audio related setting.
Maybe you did that, but that's not what you wrote. >> Stay informed about: Device manager shows no MIDI devices with Intel D101ggc mo.. |

The bios does not not explicitly mention MIDI in any way. The only mention
of audio gives you the choice of "Disabled" or "Automatic" for the onboard
audio, and it is set to "Automatic".

I would imagine it doesn't support MIDI. In my BIOS, there's a specific
entry for MIDI for the onboard sound.

I may well have to disable the onboard sound stuff and stick a sound card
into the thing. Probably a good place to try hardware profiles.
Since there's no Joystick port it won't send/receive MIDI in the 'normal'
way. Guess they didn't bother to create the virtual deivces either. It's
not like MIDI is a high-demand feature 8o).

/BIOS/ <> sound driver
If we had a linked sound driver and it wasn't all packaged
up to where someone without that board could see the files,
we might be able to figure out if it supports MIDI, and even
a manual way to add that to Device Manager (IF the feature
is enabled on the board which it might not be if same driver
didnt' automatically enable it). >> Stay informed about: Device manager shows no MIDI devices with Intel D101ggc mo.. |

What do you have selected in Sounds and Audio Devices for MIDI playback? If
there's not a physical MIDI device then it should be software synthesis. >> Stay informed about: Device manager shows no MIDI devices with Intel D101ggc mo.. |

Considering that Midi isn't mentioned anywhere in the Intel specs for that
board, i'd suspect that it isn't supported at all.

Doesn't necessarily mean anything, a physical hardware MIDI
port (a la joystick port) may not be installed but it isn't
on most boards these days, and most boards don't list every
mode of their integrated sound either. More telling might
be that there is nothing in the bios menu, although it could
even be in a different portion, page of the menu(s).
It would be very unusual for the sound driver to not handle
MIDI sounds even without the MIDI port. >> Stay informed about: Device manager shows no MIDI devices with Intel D101ggc mo.. |

However, the OP has a different need than this, is looking
for I/O from MIDI device so without the port or a pin
header, it is probably there isn't any such I/O
funtionality. >> Stay informed about: Device manager shows no MIDI devices with Intel D101ggc mo.. |

There are no settings for audio in the system bios except to either set it
to 'Auto' or 'Disable'.
There is no mention of midi anywhere in the Intel specs for the motherboard.
ftp://download.intel.com/design/motherbd/gc/D3610502US.pdf
There is no mention of midi anywhere in the specs for the Realtek ACL861
chip the motherboard uses for audio.

I found the problem. Did a Google on 'Microsoft GS wavetable sw synth' and
found a website that indicated I had to change the driver mode to ASIO
inside Cakewalk. I can now select a MIDI output device.
