Post subject: Soyo Dragon Plus! all 3 memory banks
Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard>soyo (more info?)

I have used my m/b for two years with 2 sticks of 256MB PC2100 in
banks 0 & 1. I bought a Crucial 512MB stick (so no cheap rubbish),
swapped one of the 256MB to bank 2, and put the 512MB in bank 0.
BSOD literally every 2 minutes until eventually the system got so
corrupt that it wouldn't even boot, finally saying I didn't have any
hard drives installed.
I now have just the 512MB stick alone in bank 0, Win XP re-installed
from scratch, and for 2 weeks I haven't had any problems, so the
memory itself is perfect.
Anyone else have this problem? Any suggestions? Anything I'm missing?
I've seen a comment in the NGs about how manufacturers aren't capable
of programming the m/b to use all 3 banks, which I find hard to
believe. Any comments on this?
Thanks,
David.

Try not using the middle slot. I think even Soyo says that if you use 2
sticks, don't use th middle one. These boards need quality ram. And
definitely try running memtest to really give the ram a good going over. I
would guess that your Crucial is ok. I have two 512 of crucial in mine, and
haven't had any problems.

try booting with the 512 alone, set ram to cas 3 in BIOS, 4 bank,
then power down, unplug > always ! and then install all three modules
with the 512 in the last slot, not bank 0.

The KT400DUP, at least, is documented to have limitations
using fast memory in all 3 slots. You have to leave the
middle one empty.

The documentation is on the web site, not in the manual
nor on the sales literature.

A number of us got 'bit' by this one.

right, but that was when the fsb was set to 166 or above. the
dragon plus can't run that high, his must be at 133 or so. if he is
overclocking above 133 then he should have mentioned that. but at 133
fsb it should be possible to run with three sticks of ram ~

First of all, go here and get this:

http://www.memtest86.com/

And then run it. Ideally, you shouldn't have any errors. If you do,
it's probably memory timing set incorrectly or a bad stick of RAM.
most likely, it's incorrect settings.

On my Dragon Plus! if I have the BIOS set to "Turbo", that'll give me
a ton of errors. Make sure it's set to normal, and reset the RAM page
to defaults. I have everything set to SPD, and don't mess with the
other stuff.

But you should be able to run Memtest86 overnight without any errors.
It's easier than waiting for a BSOD and eliminates any potential
Windows problems.

Documentation IS in the manual...........

Just depends on which version you received with your board.

Thanks to all of you for your input. I'll try your suggestions over
the weekend. If you don't hear from me, assume the worst, but I'll be
back one day.
David.

1. Make sure you have a good power supply

2. To get the Dragon+ to use > 512MB memory with everyone I have seen
post over the years has had CAS2 memory, usually Corsair. Nobody seems
to have more than 512MB of memory.

With 2 x 512MB Crucial CAS 2.5 (as most are) here are they ONLY timings
I could get a Dragon+ stable with:

Timing: Manual
CAS : 2 - (* see note)
Interleave: 4 bank
(Trp) 2T
(Tras) 6T (might have tried 5T once)
(Trcd) 3T
queue depth: 4 level
command rate: 2T command
Write recovery: 2T

* note - Had to do this - memory is rated at 2.5 but would only run
stable at CAS2; but might have led to an early demise for one of those
DDR's

3. Make sure your AGP card is configured correctly in the BIOS

4. I also read somewhere a while back that the newer versions of this
board (the ones that will support a Thoroughbred) or ones that have been
modded with a capacitor to support a Thoroughbred are more stable with
RAM

I understand your frustration though - I went through the same thing
about maybe a year ago. Also why I am not too fond of SOYO when
everything I was doing was working in every other computer but the
Dragon+ ...

I've managed to have a stable system with 768 Megs of cheap memory. A
generic 256 Meg stick I bought when I built the computer and a generic 512
Meg stick I bought from 18004memory.com I let the RAM timings be set by
the SPD setting. I even overclock the FSB by 7 MHz, letting the RAM run at
280 MHz, and giving me a XP 1800+ out of my 1700+

If I tried to run at CAS 2 I got TONS of memory errors with MEMTEST. But
with CAS 2.5 it runs just fine.
