Any opinions on the merits of these? They seem to be very comparable.

http://www.drobo.com/products_drobo.aspx#products_nav
http://www.netgear.com/Products/Storage/ReadyNASNVPlus/RND4000.aspx

Which should I pick?

[I'm looking for a NAS solution that has some level of Raid 1 or 5 like
protection from hardware failure, expandable, with a mix of drive-sizes]

Thanks.

I should add that with Drobo, I'll need to add DroboShare to make it a NAS.

Should I throw in the Windows Home Server in this mix as well?

I'd personally assemble it myself to get the extra flexibility.

I would even if you are comfortable with linux.

Thanks for the reply. What if you were forced to choose between

Drobo+Droboshare
ReadyNAS NV+
MS WHS

I don't want to assemble and set up such flexible storage systems
myself. A ready-made product is good enough ...

I'd go with the later myself. I dont like being locked into a proprietary system.

Anyone flogging the hardware can assemble it for you.

I dont like being stuck with the limitations they choose to have myself.

But then admittedly I know a lot more about systems than most people do.

Dunno. Thats one of the real downsides of those proprietary
systems, its very hard to get a handle on the limitations.

With a general purpose approach that uses MS WHS,
its completely trivial to work out the limitations.
