I can now confirm that old trusty SK8V does support the dual-core
Opteron 275, at least with BIOS v.1003. For me it was as simple as
dropping the new CPU in the socket and start the system. At first
post, the mobo sent a "New CPU detected - Press F1 to run setup"
message. Upon entering the BIOS setup, I saw the CPU correctly
identified as a dual-core Opteron. I rebooted and Windows (XP sp2)
started normally, automatically installed new drivers and prompted for
reboot, et voilą! It even runs cooler than the original Opteron 148 I
was using. Note that I installed VIA's 5.15A chipset drivers before
the operation, which is supposed to enhance dual-core support for the
K8T800 chipset. So those of you still using this excellent board can
further extend its life. Socket-940 Opterons 275, possibly 280 (have
not tried) can be had for cheap on eBay. In any case, that was the
best inexpansive upgrade I had done in a long while, and it saved me
the trouble of purchasing an all-new mobo / CPU / memory combo.
