Hi folks, I just bought a new Shuttle AN35(N) Ultra-400 to replace the
old ECS board. Using a new CPU of course.

I'm running XP Pro, and want to know if I can try using the same XP
installation, possibly by doing a repair install. Is this just a
dream, or a real possibility?

Thanks,
-Scott

here is a trick to reinstall windows XP without needing to activate it!

copy the activation file in Windows/System32/wpa.dbl...

then after your reinstall. reboot using F8 minimal safe mode, and copy the
wpa.dbl file back

as your changing a major component 'the motherboard' you really need to
instal XP a fresh. The above may help not having to activate it again!

please note I have never tryed out the above. But I have phoned Microsoft to
get an activation code after a reinstall... a massive string of numbers and
letters. The above trick is really when you want to reinstall XP and
haven't changed any hardware ( eg, if your system keeps crashing or has a
virus or some software problem)... so I would not recomend copying the
wpa.dbl file.

Thanks tone. I'm not worried about the activation. Just whether-or-not
I can boot to Windows.

You should be able to, assuming you have removed all the old motherboard
drivers first. You tend to have fewest problems if the chipset remains the
same (sorry, not familiar with your machines specs).

XP is really good at picking up all new hardware but your advice to remove
as many drivers as possible first is a good one. You never know how old
driver installs might work with the new hardware it picks up.

I have changed mainboards, harddrives into new mobos, etc. and never
had to reinstall XP yet. I even pulled an old HD out of my drawer to
use as a slave for additional storage. To check it out I pulled the
power cable to my new main HD, plugged it in and it booted clean into
NT Server4.0! I forgot that it was the old practice drive I used when
studying for my MCSE! Booted clean in on a new AK39N board.
BTW-that AN35N-Ultra is a really great board. You made a good
decision. One of the guys at work bought one on sale at Newegg, and
it's a really great board. Very stable and fast.

If your new motherboard have a chipset from a another manufacturer, it
might not work. E.g. changing from VIA to Nvidia or SiS, it might not
work. Seems like going from Intel to SiS and the other way work...

But a repair-install should fix it...

Save some time later and to a complete rebuild from scratch as this will
definitely stop you having to fault find and undertake corrective action
later. It may take an hour or two longer but will save you more than this in
the long run I am sure.

Thanks for all of your kind responses. I'm back up and running with
the new board. Went from an SiS chipset to nVidia-- what a clusterfck.
Had to re-install XP after all. Boot.ini was corrupt, all drives and
partitions were "improperly dismounted," (heh heh), the list of
disasters was endless. Anyway it's working now, and as predicted,
stable as a.....as a........as a............er, anyway......

Great group, thanks!
