Next: old EPOX MVP3C-M voltage problem

I've got a homebuild system that is a couple years old, based on the
EP-8KHA+ with an AMD 2400+. A few months ago one of my memory chips
went out so I remove it and now run with a single 512meg PC2100 chip.
In the past few months (before or after the memory loss I'm not sure)
my computer has been locking up, freezing, crashing (BSOD), etc. I
upgraded my video card (not because of this problem) and that hasn't
changed anything either. I got fed up with it so I reformatted and
installed Windows XP. This crashes just as often. Some programs I
launch will either crash or freeze the entire computer. Often at
night I leave it on and in the morning it's frozen and I can't get an
image on my monitor and I'm forced to push the button. I uninstalled
my SB Audigy but that didn't help. I unplugged USB devices and put my
USB mouse on the PS/2 port. I upgarded the BIOS to the latest version
and set the BIOS settings to "fail-safe defaults". I ran a memory
test overnight and it didn't find any errors. I'm not sure what else
I can do. I now suspect the motherboard.
Does this sound like the motherboard? I had to buy a new mb and find
the same problem. But I'm running out of options.

But it will it have put a higher load on the PSU? This fault may be PSU
related.

Which tester (below) did you use?

Have you run it longer than overnight?

It would be worth trying another PSU.

Could be a motherboard problem. My 8KHA+ went that way. You need to check
for dodgy capacitors, are any of them leaking or have domed tops ? If so,
you need a new mobo.

Just a follow-up note, in order to help others: I bought a new
motherboard (Asus) and now everything is fine. It was definitely the
motherboard. Now my CPU temp is 44 even when 100% used rendering
video. With the Epox I was over 50 idle. I also applied artic silver
to the CPU/heatsink when I upgraded, so that could help too.
Life's too short and motherboards too cheap to suffer through crashes
caused by a bad motherboard!

The evidence is very slim but I feel 44ºC when under high load is
too low. Did you check that the clock multiplier and any FSB
clock links are correctly selected?

You were completely right. While looking at my old Epox board before
taking out the trash, I noticed that almost all the capacitors were
leaking out the top!!

You are correct. The windows xp system -> hardware -> devices reports
that I have an Athlon XP 1800+ and I really have a 2400+. And I
thought my problems were solved. I will set up the BIOS correctly, I
hope it won't destabalize my system. If it does I guess I can always
keep it set to be 1800+, it may be slower but it's very stable.

<smiles> If you leave it under clocked, you'll be able to under-run the
CPU voltage too! This would reduce the heat generated and could
lead to reducing the fan speeds and hence the noise generated.
But you should be able to get it going 'properly'.
