Merry Xmas all, can anyone help with the following problem ?

I am running windows xp pro on a MSI KM2M motherboard with an
Athlon XP 2000 CPU and 736mb of DDR Ram, the system runs really
good (when its actually running) however on 3 occasions now when I have
shut down the computer and left it for a while, on booting up I
get an error message which prevents me loading windows and therefore
having to reformat etc.. to get the system running again.
the message is as follows

WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM the following file is
missing or corrupt.

Any help would be greatly appreciated !!

Cheers
Fogler

That file is part of the registry, and not a file that you can replace
from the CD. It's unique for every computer, and even on that
computer it only represents a partial snapshot of the full registry at
that specific time.

This Microsoft KB article outlines the process involved in getting the
system to boot again:

<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307545" target="_blank">http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307545</a>

Have you got Service Pack 1 on the system? There's a fix there for
some circumstances of repeated registry corruption.

Obviously you want to find the underlying cause of this issue, but
it's gonna be hard to troubleshoot when it's so intermittent.
