I have a 200gb Maxtor hd, that i placed in an external comp-usa
enclosure, and Ive been using it for the last few months. All of a
sudden, last week the enclosure stopped powering up, leading me to
believe that either the case was dead or the harddrive. So I bought a
new enclosure, of far inferior quality, but even that one did not power
up either.
By the way, both enclosures are powered with a plug-in-to-wall power
cable, not usb.
So, hoping that my hd wasnt dead, I tested the hard drive in an
internal setup in my alienware tower, and it works fine. thankfully.
So i have centered the problem on a power issue, and I have tested both
enclosures in different sockets around my house. Any reccomendations on
what to do?
thanks

The disk may have trouble spinning up and drawing too much power
on start-up as a consequence. Have a look into the SMART
attributes. There is one for spin-up time (or the like).
If it looks suspicious, you disk may have a problem.

Buy a better external case if you must have it in an external case. >> Stay informed about: External Hard Drive Enclosure Power issues |
