External Cache in BIOS FEATURES SETUP be disabled,
also what about CPU Internal Cache and Video BIOS Shadow ?
Re-installing W98SE or at least trying to, and would a search
via google bring up a list all BIOS screen settings or will they
differ too much regarding hardware installed.

Enable the external cache, particularly if you do not have a "+" type
cpu, it makes a huge difference. Also, leave the cpu internal cache
enabled. Video BIOS shadow is typically ok, but makes little
difference once windows is running, as the video driver replaces the
functions in the video BIOS.

Many thanks Kyle, I cannot understand why this 503+ is so difficult
to re-install W98SE and yet XP & Linux is not, I doubt whether
it is a "+" CPU only that it is an AMD 500.
The one thing I have never tried is the Load BIOS & SETUP defaults,
in fact never even looked at these two options, as I assume that changes
would be done without options, any advice on this.

Yes this could be it, though I was under the impression
that a larger than 32GB partition would cause problems
The first drive was an 80GB partitioned into 4 of 20GB each, but the
second drive I tried was originaly a 20GB, partitioned to a 10, 5 and 5 this
was within the limits of the old formatting limit of 32GB,so I thought..
Though the first 10GB partition was is now unusable owing to it being
used by Linux and I have no idea how to remove it.
But I have now reverted to an older 6.4GB to get it up and running,
and what a nice change to have W98SE go though without the long
processes and even longer hangups.

If you want to remove that Linux partition, just run FDISK fron your Win98SE
setup boot disk. Go to the option to remove partitions, and remove the
partitions starting from the end of the disk. The Linux partition will probably
show up as a "Non-DOS" partition.
Or, you can download the diagnostic tools from your hard drive's manufacturer
and perform a low-level format of the drive. That will get rid of everything!

Actually I would have started with the Load BIOS/SetUp defaults and gone on
from there. Easier then to try your own changes one at a time. This is
normal practice once the BIOS has been updated and a good basis otherwise.
More than likely something completely different - Power Management or IRQs
for example are evergreens

not heard of any 32 GB limitation, I have formatted two 80 GB

The original BIOSes had a 32 GB limitation. The newer "beta" versions fixed this
problem, as well as adding support for the K6-2+ and K6-III+ processors.

Thanks all the 503+ is up and running even better than ever,
I realised my mistake concerning the HD limit and also thanks
to Alex for the Linux removal tip.
I did at the start install the Via3in1, then forgot about it, but finally
I installed the 4in1440v(a) version.
I seem to think their are other updates but everything seem to be
running OK at the moment. Just about to try those that Kyle suggested.
