How did you decide that the old one had died ?
If it was something other than the drive itself that
had died, replacing the drive wont fix the problem.

Which makes it much more likely that
it isnt actually the drive that has died.

Thats not surprising given that it cant read the diskette as evidenced later.

Most likely the floppy controller the other end of
the ribbon cable is plugged into is what's died.
Try the new drive and cable in a different system to be sure
that its not just very bad luck of two dead drives in a row.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
