My AT&T 6300 has an 8086-2 process with 640 Kb of RAM and two 5 1/4" floppy
drives, and still worked the last time I powered it up.
There's a Honeywell GE/PAC 4010 at a Long Beach refinery that was installed
in 1975 and was still running as of April, 2002.

Maybe you oughta mention that Honeywell to the Register?

Maybe not, its not a PC.
There are thousands of 20+ year old running PCs, they must be pretty bored
at the Register.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Found the oldest working PC? |

Given that Intel was one of the sponsor of the contests, I suspect
that by "PC" they mean an x86 powered IBM PC-style system. You're old
AT&T might count if it were in active use, though would that predate
1983?

My cousin has a real estate type business where he does apartment
maintenance and rentals. In 1981 I put together an XT set with a cga
monitor, 5 gig mfm hard drive, two 5.25 low density disk drives, a combo
clock, lpt, comm port card and 640 k of memory. This was one of the fastest
machines in the day because it can be ran a 8 MHz. Along with this is a 9
pin Epson printer. No mouse, no modem.
We made a simple spreadsheet program in Lotus and a few form letters in
First Choice. The only upgrade that has been done is to go from DOS 2.0 to
DOS 3.0.
This thing has been running for all these years, the hard drive sometimes
sounds like a model T he just taps it and it comes back to life. Its hard to
believe that the hard drive would last this long but he keeps his office
clean as a hospital and air conditioned. I think the monitor has been
repaired 4 or 5 times or he has replaced it. I don't even know where you
could find a cga monitor.
I gave him a 486 a few years back and he refused to use it<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Found the oldest working PC? |

The IBM PC-XT was also known as the model 5160.
The original IBM PC was even older, and was also know as the
model 5150. I have one of those.
I wish I knew about this contest. I could have easily beat out that
Dutch company!! I would have even re-installed the single sided
160K disk drive, and reduced the memory back to the original 48K,
if it would have made HP & Intel happier.
Now, were is my DOS 1.0 disk ??????

Yikes, don't let Sheryl read this! She'll have my 5150 (with cassette
port) on EBay before I get home tonight! ...wonder if the EU is worth
anything? Unfortunately, all my documentation went out with the move,
ten years go.

I've got one of the very early ones here (64K MB with cassette port).
I'll have to look at whether it has an 8087, and what sort.
I never realized it could be worth something.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Found the oldest working PC? |

Keith, has anyone ever told you that you need to throw out your old
junk more often? One of these days we're going to hear about you on
the news:
"Man killed after being under a giant stack of IBM Model M keyboards.
Details at 11!" :>

I wonder about people like that.
The earliest human presence in North America occured like 15,000 years ago.
Recently, archeologists found a 30,000 year old settlement in Siberia. They
feel these sites may be related because of the remarkable similarity of the
tools these early humans used.
That means for 15,000 years there was little progress in the tools these
people used.
I wonder how long you can keep an IBM PC going?
