Windows XP crashes & automatically reboots usually under heavy file
i/o (DVD-ROM activity or large amounts of data transfer across the
home network). I have boosted the voltage to the DIMMS by .2V
(anything less was totally unstable). MEMTEST86: ran all tests for 8
hours with zero errors reported.
I need help troubleshooting the random crashes / instability. Has
anyone else had similar issues?
Thanks in advance for your time.
Kurt

Rick-
What type / size of RAM are you running?
Did you ever run MEMTEST86 on it?
What are your timings?
Thanks.

Try relaxing the ram timing to 2.5,3,3,7 and see if that helps, if not i would
suspect the power supply because so many drives in your system. DOUG >> Stay informed about: Gigabyte GA-8KNXP (REV 2.0) stability issues |

Very similar to what I have. However I have not had any difficulties
Except I am running Kingston Hyper something RAM two 512 Meg chips.
Everything else is standard. Running two Seagate 160 Gig in Raid 0.
I avoided the GigaByte and Silicon Raid controllers and went with the
Intel. Disabled them in the BIOS.
A question what media do you use with your Plextor?
I have difficulties burning Ritek G04 DVD-R over 3 Gig. Just got a
service call in to sent the drive back to Belgium. What blank media are
you using for burning DVDs.

Wish I had the luxury of actually burning a DVD, but I haven't made it
that far.
In fact, I had total lock up of my system last night such that it
won't even make it to the mem test screen. I get a long series of
short beeps. The manual says the BIOS is telling me that it's a power
issue. This leads me to believe I may have an inadequate power suppy
at 380W (Antec). Also, I may rip out the DPS2 and try to power up
without it.
To all, what size power supplies are you running? How much / what
kind of equipment are you feeding? Are you running DPS2 with that?
Thanks.

I use 400 and 500 watt Raidmax or Powermax power supplies. They can be had
for around $50 -$60 if you do a pricewatch search. DOUG >> Stay informed about: Gigabyte GA-8KNXP (REV 2.0) stability issues |

I tried to keep a quiet PC so I installed the Zalmann flower cooler thus
no DSP2 installed here, but I did by the 400 Watt Zalmann power Supply.
Bad idea to skimp on the PSU. I bought this kit from Quiet PC that has
the 400 Watt PSU, CPU Cooler, NorthBridge cooler and a Hard drive
cooler.
I am running 2 160 Gig Barracudas, 1 160 Gig Maxtor, Plextor DVD Writer,
Mirsumi DVD-Rom and comination drive of 7 in 1 floppy drive plus 6 other
solid state devices for digital camera. ATI AIW 9800 SE and a Capture
card.

SET it for SPD..
And do not select Top Performance or the other over clocking modes..
Top Performance Can Fry your memory as it set the voltage to 2.9v.

You're probably right, I had forgotten I tweaked it a bit. I also currently have the mem freq up to 210 mHz, but ...
I ran a few rendering jobs in this config as well. But I'd stick to the SPD values until you're stable, SAVE those settings, write 'em down, then Xperiment if you like. I'm not wicked into overclocking. I need the stability more. I'm just a born "fiddler", so I gotta go play with the hardware!

Truepower 480w here, rock solid. Run this test to give you an idea where
you stand:
http://www.jscustompcs.com/power_supply/
I ranked 400w with this system, probably more now since I'm charging my PDA
thru USB, a recent addition. >> Stay informed about: Gigabyte GA-8KNXP (REV 2.0) stability issues |

Bob-
I was afraid that the above link would be suggested since I've read
about it previously on these boards. My machine specs out at roughly
445W. If I can believe this number, then I'm way short at 380W and I
need to upgrade. Also, machines built with this mobo by
tastycomputers.com come with a +550W Antec supply. Looks like they
are serious about mo' power as well.
Now I wonder if I've been subjecting my machine to the equivalent of
one brown out after another? Now with its no post condition, my next
step will be to clear the CMOS to see if I can give it a breath of
life.
How does your Truepower 480W sound? Is it loud? I'm pleased with the
noise level of the Antec 380W. I'll suck up the upgrade even if it
means putting up with a little extra noise; I just hope that it
doesn't sound like a Hoover.
