Hello,
I decided to convert the drives in one of my machines to SATA. I pulled all
(4) drives out of the machine and placed one SATA drive on SATA0_SB. I then
attempted to Install XP SP2. It seems to do fine, goes through the 'copying
files to HD' process, but when it reboots, it begins the process alll over
again, asking me to agree to the license and choose a partition. After
choosing the partition, set up detects the windows directory it previously
installed. It makes little difference whether I allow it to overwrite it or
re-format it, the loop continues. Again, I have not installed any other
drives in the machine yet.
I had the controller in the BIOS set to 'Manual', mapping the controller to
SATA0 & SATA1_SB.
The only way I can get set up to complete is by setting it to 'Auto', which
maps it to the Primary IDE. Is this less than optimal? Why will it not work
when mapped to SATA? Is there a way (or a need) to force it?
Thanks for any ideas,
John

Oops...the drive in question is a 320GB Seagate Sata.

OK, more info I forgot to relate, and here it is:
I DLed and extracted the Sata drivers from Gigabytes web site. I tried
pressing F6 and inserting a floppy. ALthough setup sees the drivers and says
it will load them, set up still loops back to the beginning. I also tried
slipstreaming the drivers into XP SP2, same results.
Thanks again,
Hark

If SATA IDE mode will not work you may also try the following:
Place no drives on IDE1
Place only optical devices on IDE2
Set SATA to RAID (RAID Ready mode - single hard drive)
-Do nothing with RAID bios at boot for single drive
-Can also use RAID 0 (I recommend RAID 0 for system with third SATA for
data but a lot of opinions on this) or RAID 1 if desired
Do not re-map drives, simply set to RAID and enable RAID ROM (SATA will
be IDE3 of similar by default)
Set HD propriety for boot
Use F6 install for RAID driver
see if this works?
Does everything work fine with old IDE drives? Good question to rule-out
bios and other problems already noted. There is a history of bad
caps with this board; have discarded many. This is a less likely
consideration so do not worry about this first.
Good luck

Hi Zivorad. Thanks for the response. The system is running OK with SATA0 &
SATA1_SB auto mapped to primary IDE ( I discovered early on that the only
way to make this work [at least here] is to leave the Primary IDE channel
empty, but turned on in the BIOS). I also have only a DVDRW on the
secondary, However, I am able to attach an IDE drive to the secondary as
well. In fact, in order to copy data off the IDE drives, I set the DVDRW to
slave and whatever drive I was copying from as master. This worked well, and
I was able to copy the data from all 4 IDE drives.
My current set up is:
SATA0_SB - 320GB seagate
SATA1_SB - 400GB seagate
SATA0_SII - 250GB seagate
IDE 1 - empty but active with SATA0 &1_SB mapped
IDE 2 - DVDRW (master) (with the ability to set as slave to accomodate an
IDE HD)
The problem was figuring all of this out. Nothing in the manual and your
post is the first that discussed it intelligently (unfortunately, not in
time to save me the time...). I had posts in XP.General and a few hardware
groups, including .storage.
I guess I'm stuck with this config, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.
Thanks again,
Hark
