Post subject: GA-8KNXP Ultra Motherboard SCSI Advice Please
Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard>giga-byte (more info?)

Hi

I'm finally putting this old (GA-6BA motherboard) PC out to pasture and
building a replacement. This old one has a Adaptec 2940UW SCSI PCI card
installed and I want to take the SCSI CD,CD-R & Jazz out of it and put them
into the new computer to help keep the costs down a bit.

The GA-8KNXP Ultra has two Ultra-320 SCSI connectors controlled by a Adaptec
SCSI Ultra-320 7902W controller, so I'm thinking I could use one connector
for the new U320 SCSI hard disk I will install and the other connector for
the peripherals mentioned above. Could I do this, or are both connectors
interlinked and doing so would drag the speed of the U320 hard drive down?
Or are both connectors totally independent? I've also just had a thought for
another question, these peripherals would be SCSI 2 (I think) would I have
to get an adaptor to make it fit into the second SCSI connector?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Kevin

The 2 channels are independent. Its a good idea to put 16 bit wide SCSI
devices on one channel and 8 bit narrow on another to avoid termination
problems. You will need a wide to narrow converter. A good source of
SCSI parts here:

Brilliant, thanks for that information. I can order the parts.
