Post subject: GA-965P-DQ6 SATA
Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard>gigabyte (more info?)

Allow me to start by stating that I've not only searched everywhere in other
forums, but I've also read the following post below several times to try
everything available:

http://www.hwkb.com/Uwe/Forum.aspx/mainboard-gigabyte/3587/Gigabyte-96...S3-prob

I have a GA-965P-DQ6 R 1.0 Purchased last January from Newegg.

I get many of the same issues described in this post as well as others all
related to the IO of data from the hardrive, causing lockups to the point of
running a fresh install to correct the issues.

I have four (4) WD2500KS hard drives.
I have two (2) LiteOn SATA DVD Burners

The Rest of my system
Intel Core 2 Duo E6300
GSkill 6400 x 2 GB DDR 800
EVGA 8800GTS 640
Creative Xi Fi Gamer Sound card
600wt PSU (Seasonic)

I started all of this with my main OS installed (win xp pro) on a single SATA
drive on the jmicron port 0. I set everything to default IDE mode without
going the ACHI or RAID mode as I frankly didn't understand how to set it all
up. (I'm not a newb, this is my 4th pc Build in 6 years for myself)

Everything will work for about 3 months. THen one day the system will just
crawl to a grinding halt. I was trying to unrar a very large file, 8GB in
size, the first time. So I thought I had simply push WinRar to its limit.
That's when I started to notice the issues.

After a lot of research, including flashing a new MB bios, Installing the
latest drivers for both Jmicron and ICH8R, Flashing the EPROMM on the Marvel
Nic (which was working before and after the flash), swapping out the cables
with brand new ones, Trying to Force WIndows to keep the HD in DMA 5 mode
rather than PIO mode, finally I wiped the HD and reinstalled Windows Fresh.

Worked again for about 2-3 Months. This time the Nic failed on my while I was
downloading from a Freinds FTP site, and the hard drive issues started all
over again. Cursed the nic, bought a cheap replacedment. researched the issue
to death again trying to salvage the install. ( this would include scouring
the event file logs, reviewing the 51 event, 11 event and 9 event codes, hot
patching, adjusting the registry to fix ect) Tested every hard drive with 3rd
party tools. No joy. Again. Same drive, the OS drive.

This time I wiped that drive, removed it from teh system entirely. Wiped the
remaining drives (backing up the data of course) partitioned the main OS into
two parts, one for the Pagefile, and partitioned a second drive exaclty the
same so I could ghost the OS back over the top of the first.

Ran perfect for about 3 Months.

Boom. Again the 51 error returns in the even log. The system starts throwing
the "Delayed file write" error all over the place. Only this time it is worse,
its the 3rd drive with all of my storage data (the unpartitioned drive) is
what's having all of the issues. It's on the ICH8R drive just like one other
drive, and it's the only one having issues. Remember the first drive I pulled
from the system. All drives check out clean.

I have about 80% of the data backed up. I try copying my data over to another
drive on the Jmicron, and ofc ourse the system locks up. I try to a USB HD,
and another external on Firewire. The system locks up. Port swapping or
changing what controller I'm using doesn't seem to matter. I take the storage
drive out and try the storage drive in a different PC and NO ISSUES. Full
transfer rates, no stuttering, clean file transfers, checked out okay with
tools. Everything.

So I try a full reinstall working for the ACHI/RAID installed ahead of the OS,
and I cannot get XP setup to recognize the HD's to install to if the BIOS is
set to ACHI mode. That's with the proper floppy based files for them to read.

I research some more, try again. Make it all the way to windows this time,
get the Intel and Jmicron drivers installed, and then when it tells me to
reboot, I do, and then I can't get Windows to boot back up again.

I even tried a boot with Vista, and got stuck at "unrecognized Disk" with
teh proper drivers not helping either.

So I wipe the HD and reload the OS (xp this time), get back into XP, reload
all of my drivers, and while I am installing one of my games. BAM. ISSUES
STILL HERE. At this point the only thing I can think of is somehow the
controllers are "bad".

So I've got two choices. Try wiping the OS again, re installing, and cross my
fingers for another 2 hours of work down the tubes. Or I can Call Newegg for
an RMA (which they don't appear to carry the DQ6 anymore). I'd almost rather
move for a 680i Nvidia chipset at this point as I don't hear the same level
of issues that people are having with the ICH8R/9R's

What do you guys think. Try to salvage an otherwise phenomenal board (which
if it can be done, please god help me so I don't shoot myself) or move on to
something ...better? Different?

I'll post whater anyone needs for specs, info, ect.

Have you contacted WD tech?
You ran an intensive memory test?

Then as you suspect it would seem to be mobo related, allthough I've seen
pwr supplies cause similar issues
