GA-P35-DS3R won't boot with IDE drive attached

Some good news at least. The new SATA drives work just fine. So, maybe
this motherboard does not support IDE hard drives even though the manual
says that it does. A bit disappointing as I was planning on using at
least one 40G IDE drive in my new system.

Did you eliminate the possibility it is a cable problem? If the an
IDE CDR works from the port, it seems a stretch to image why a HDD
doesn't unless it is a cable problem. Would appreciate a response as
I am very interested in the same motherboard.

Yes, I tried a different cable and a different controller card. Also,
my DVD ROM works fine on the same cable and controller (the one on the
M/B). Also, I noticed I can't get my floppy drive to work either so I
am using USB floppy instead. I am not really sure what is going on at
this point, but my new SATA drives are working just fine.

I may have figured out what is going on with the IDE drives. There is
an option for the Gigabyte SATA connectors that can be set to SATA or
SATA/IDE and it was set for SATA. The manual does not really say much
about this or I missed it. I am hoping that this is the problem with
the IDE drives and I will let you know after I do some more testing if
it does in fact work. I don't really need IDE drives to work since I
have SATA drives now, but I would like everything to work as it should.

Much appreciate your update. Will look forward to the result of your
'test'. The SATA/IDE setting in the BIOS seems strange. My present
bpoard (Gigabyte GA-8IPE1000 Pro) doesn't have such a setting and
SATA, IDE and FDD all peacefully co-exist!

Lucky you. There are two SATA controllers on this board and at least
one of them acts as either a SATA controller or an IDE controller which
I think is the problem. If they had chosen to use a stand alone IDE
controller, I doubt there would be a problem or maybe it is the bios
that is the problem. In any case, I have everything working now except
for the floppy drive and I am able to use an external USB drive for that .

Usually, I don't have this kind of problem putting together a system,
but then I normally go with ASUS boards. I am not sure I will buy
another Gigabyte board, though it does seem to work OK other than the
setup problems and the floppy drive.

I assume u are using the supplied Gigabyte IDE cable.
The cable needs to have the master unit on the end connector, the
slave in the middle.
I usually do this but I read someplace that this was required and I
didn't believe it so I checked it out. It didn't work with the slave
on the end and I don't know why.
I don't think it used to be that way.

the other possibilities (as I found out also) is the drive jumpers not
set right. or the cable up side down.

Black master, grey slave, blue/green mobo

Setting the drives for cable select might be the best option
