Here the problem:
2 hd on ide/raid controller promise in ide-mode
Maxtor 80GB Ata133
Maxtor 160GB Ata133
AMD 2400+
512MB DDR PC2700
SB Live 5.1 Player
ATi 9700 Pro

They are too slow...the access time is 16.2 ms and the read burst speed is
66,1 mbps. The max read speed is 52498Kps, the minimun 2574kps, the medium
41864kps (hdtach values). These values affect the entire machine...mp3 and
avi and dvd jump on audio. Never had problems like that with the old 20GB
Quantum Fireball AS.

Is it possible that the 2 hd have so low values? I tried defragmenting but
it's all the same, no improvements except for the noises.

Any help could be useful.

Thanx

Which Promise driver are you using?
IIRC, some versions of the Promise IDE mode driver cause sound stutters...
See if you can try an earlier or later driver version.....or use the RAID
mode driver with single drive arrays.

I'm using the drivers from gigabyte site for the 20276 chipset. In raid
single array mode I should resolve the problem?

ATA mode of Promise controllers uses part hardware part software emulation.
That slows them down. As Muttley said, set them up as single drive RAID
array and all sound problems (and jerky mouse movement) will disappear. With
Promise controllers you can redefine the drive without loosing its content.
That does NOT work with GigaRAID controllers, they always loose the drive's
content when redefining its mode of operation.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Do not know the status of this speed problem, however, a couple of points.

HD Tach is an old stand by and is no longer worked by anyone. It is
notorious for bad reports on access time.
Sandra is better.

The only Maxtor ATA 133 drive I have ( 30G ATA133 5600rpm ) shows a HD Tach
MAX of about 38MB/S and average of 31 MB/S.
So your 52.5 MAX and 41.9 AVG doesn't look that *bad*.

Is this measurement problem?
DiskSpeed32 is interesting and useful. A good look at the whole drive.
PCMark2002 has a HDD test area. It will test a file copy speed.
HD_SPEED is useful as it allows you to set the Block Size.

I have no experience with Promise. My SATA RAID and PATA RAID(s) are all
HighPoint. I have found:

Going from Master to Cable Select can make a difference.
These systems do like uniformity, perhaps fdisk to the match sizes.
The driver should match the BIOS in version number.
It appears that the faster the native drive the lower the block size should
be. Move down to 16 or 32kB.

good luck,

JPS
