I bought a Sony SZ670 laptop with dual video drivers, of
which one is defined for 'speed', the other for 'stamina'.
As a desktop replacement the unit is switched to 'speed'
- the Nvidia GeForce 8400M GS - and connected to a 22"
display with native 1680x1050 resolution.
Rightclicking on the desktop gets to the Nvida Control
Panel, then Display > Appearance > Change Resolution
Attributes, but resolution is maxed out at 1280 x 800
(and it looks very bad!).
Control Panel > Change Display Configuration doesn't
make any improvement. I've tried putting the laptop
first, the monitor first, etc., with no help.
In all cases, the laptop's resolution is 1400 x 900 and
doesn't change. It looks amazing, with the LED
illumination behind that ultrathin screen.
I need that monitor! There is no DVI connection on that
$2000 laptop, but I've just ordered a dock that
supposedly has one, but can't be sure that will solve
the problem, though.
I've obviously missed something invidious ...
???

It would appear that the video chip used on the laptop's motherboard is too
underpowered to drive a resolution setting as high as 1680 x 1050. You'll
either have to get a laptop with a powerful discrete video card in it, or,
get a smaller LCD monitor that doesn't require such a high resolution
setting.

However did you come up with this howler? Not only is the nVidia 8400M GS a
'discrete' video card, it is certainly capable of 1680 X 1050 (see Dell's
notebook offerings for an example.)

You don't mention the operating system; that could have a bearing on the
answer to your problem.
I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 with a 15.4 inch 1680 X 1050 display (+WSXVGA)
and an nVidia GeForce 8600M GS 256 MByte video adapter. The operating
system is Vista Home Premium; the nVidia Control Panel is ver. 1.4.220.00;
the driver version is 7.15.11.5669 dated 10/4/2007. The system has no
problem displaying at resolutions from 1680 X 1050 down to 800 X 600.
The nVidia GeForce 8600M GS is plug compatible with the 8400M GS (yes, there
is now an nVidia standard form factor for 8x00M display adapters.)
Does your system properly detect the external monitor? Have you installed
the proper .inf file for the external monitor?
For me to use different settings for my notebook display and the external
LCD monitor, I must select 'Dual View'. Then I can set a different
resolution for each display (Vista Home Premium already has the proper .inf
files to correctly recognize the external LCD display and offer the correct
resolution choices.)
Also, the standard driver (7.15.11.5669 10/04/2007) for the 8600M GS has
three speed steps, one for 2D, one for low load 3D acceleration, and one for
high load 3D acceleration (the GPU clock and the memory clock speeds
change.)
I can't give you any specifics for YOUR system, since I don't know what your
operating system is and what Sony may have done differently. I suggest that
your system SHOULD be capable of doing what you wish, and that Sony customer
support is the best place to get specifics. Adding a DVI connector is not
necessary for the higher resolution, and is unlikely to solve the problem.

If not, then there is no way that you will ever be presented with the CHOICE
of 1680 X 1050. No need to talk to anyone a ACER. Just use the website and
download the diver for the Acer AL2216W monitor. The file you want is

You can either follow the directions for finding and downloading the proper

Download and save AL2216W.zip. Unzip AL2216W.zip and install the .inf file.
Then use the 'Dual View' setting in nVidia Control Panel to select 1680 X
1050 for the external monitor. You should have success.

Thanks, but...
Does that URL go anywhere for you? I tried it on two
browsers with no result, then went huntin' via
acersupport, where I found a 6k "Driver" file correlated
with the monitor. Unzipped, it contained three very
small files and no instructions. Is that it?

Poor advice. Try installing RivaTuner and setting the different resolutions
this way. Should work no problem. >> Stay informed about: Need GURU help getting 8400M (Sony laptop) to drive 1680x1.. |

This looks like a great idea, but when I went to the
Guru3D site to find the appropriate Rivatuner resource I
found a huge spectrum of download opportunities and no
"Selection Guide".
I'll work on it, but if anyone here knows what sort of
aspirin will help this headache your advice will be very
welcome. Or is it just "Rivatuner 2.06" without
forceware 3.42.6.4.89.76.8.7.944.5 ???

I would try that one. Let us know how it goes. >> Stay informed about: Need GURU help getting 8400M (Sony laptop) to drive 1680x1.. |

The long URL I cited worked long enough for me to download the file, but
later the URL no longer worked. That often happens with downloads from
International Corporations that don't have their home website in the USA
(speaking as a computer user in the USA; the reverse may be true when the
shoe is on the other foot.)
And yes the three files are
al2216w.cat
AL2216W.ICM
AL2216W.INF .
al2216w.cat ensures the integrity of the 'driver' files.
AL2216W.IMC is a color profile used to match scan, print, and display
appearance of images.
AL2216W.INF is merely a text file that contains the monitor information
needed for the operating system to 'recognize' the monitor and offer the
correct resolution choices. You can read it with 'Notepad'.
To install the .inf file -
Attach the external Acer AL2216W monitor to your notebook.
Open 'Device Manager' in the Control Panel.
Right Click on 'Monitors' and Left Click on 'Scan for Hardware Changes'.
When a new monitor is reported, Right Click on the new monitor, then choose
'Update Driver Software'.
Chose 'Browse my computer for updated driver software'.
Browse to the folder containing AL2216W.INF .
Left Click on 'Next' and follow the directions.
The above procedure should give you the ability to set the external display,
using 'Double View', to set the external monitor resolution to 1680 X 1050.

Thanks for the feedback.
Acer really should have included with the monitor packaging a CD containing
the files and instructions for installing them.
