What do you mean by test sound?
Assuming that your cables are all plugged in correctly, is your onboard
sound selected as primary sound source in the sound settings of your OS
(some Windows, I assume)? Maybe the old mainboard's sound chip is still
selected there...

If you open volume control (the little speaker icon in the taskbar
beside your clock) and you open options->settings is your onboard sound
driver shown? Are there other drivers shown in the drop down menu?

As you can see, more info needed.

Good luck,

Jesco

thanks jesco, as well as my current onboard drivers, there are others
in the list, all of which are said to be working properly. should i
disable these other drivers? my os is xp pro by the way. when i say
test sound i mean that when you set up the speaker configuration it has
a play button and when clicked a short sound comes out of each speaker,
hope this makes sense, cheers, chowdown

Ok, getting closer.
Seems like whatever software you want to make sound with is adressing
the old soundchip.
-Try to select your new sound chip as primary sound hardware.
-Try to remove or disable all drivers of nonexistent hardware from
device manager.
If you want to play safe, delete all sound entries in device manager and
reinstall the newest sound drivers from the manufacturer's website.

hi jesco, think i may have done more harm than good!! As you suggested
i deleted all sound drivers then reinstalled the one from the
disc(motherboard) and but did not work, there is a yellow exclaimation
mark on 'Audio Device On High Definition Audio Bus' where its listed
in the device manager but it wont let me reinstall driver when i try or
roll back driver or uninstall it either. in the device status box, it
says:'this device is not configured properly(code1) to reinstall
drivers, click reinstall button' but when i do click that nothing
happens! i may have to throw the pc out the window soon!! cheers

This is strange.
Did you try to install the drivers downloaded from the link I gave?
Those are the newest audio drivers for your GA-MA69VM-S2.
Reinstalling those drivers should get you running...
Are you sure there is only one (the onboard) sound chip in your system?
Are the audio cables plugged in next to the mouse, keyboard, etc. or via
one of the additional slots below?

I reinstalled the drivers via the link you gave and reinstalled the
drivers from disc, separately of eachother but still no joy, the
speakers are plugged into the one of the jacks below all the the other
stuff, do you think using a usb adapter might make difference?
