Post subject: Gamers - What LCDs do you have?
Archived from groups: comp>sys>ibm>pc>hardware>video (more info?)

I first saw the Samsung 191T late last year. It was on display at
Best Buy and it was demoing Medal of Honor. I was in awe. it looked
beautiful. i didn't get much time to mess around with it, but I knew
I had to have it.

fast forward to today - I am the proud owner of the 191T (for $623
shipped, I couldn't pass it up).

This thing is a beauty in 2D. I've read others complaints of "too
bright," "creamy whites" - whatever. I see the most crisp and clear
display from any LCD and the "creamy bright whites" are not a problem
for me.

My problem is with games - particularly Day of Defeat. I'm noticing
ghosting and blurring, and it gets worse with dark scenes. for DoD,
i'm running in-game at 1024x768 (that seemed to have the clearest
graphics with the least amount of ghosting). i had it up to the
highest res for the game (i forget what it was), but it didn't look
right.

I'm reading about response times and wondering if any of you gamers
have a < 20ms LCD and 1) have you played games on a >20 LCD and can
you compare, or 2) do you notice any ghosting with your LCD, and 3)
what brand/model is it?

I don't want to get a < 20ms LCD and find out it's just not as good as
this beautiful Samsung.

I may even step down to an 18" if the response is < 20ms and it's
comparable to the 191T in terms of quality.

Yes, I know CRTs are better. But it's an LCD I'm looking for.

Thanks in advance..

1) I have played games on really old LCDs with horribly slow response times
("mouse pointer disappears"-style). I guess this doesn't count.

2) I notice just a little ghosting in counterstrike when passing by a bright
light in a dark area. Otherwise, nothing at all. I'm also running all my
games in 1024 but that's mainly because of my gfx card that gets slow in
anything above that (I'm also running 2x FSAA and 2x AF).

3) I have a Hitachi CML174SXW (W just means "White" I guess).

is the Hitachi a 17"? i read another review from a gamer that 1) got
the 191T and had it back in the box in 10 minutes and 2) got the
Hitachi 17" "gamer" LCD (with the 16ms response time) and had it back
in the box in an hour.

i have a GeForce 4 Ti4200 and I set up a dual monitor setup and the
difference between the two is like night and day, without 2xFSAA and
2XAF.

actually, i haven't tried AA or AF.. i should do that.

i kind of "got used to" the ghosting and blurring, but i had a
headache an hour later. and it's really dark. had to adjust the
gamma all the way.

i quite like the dual monitor setup, so i think i'll stick with that.
i'm sure in a year or 2 they will have perfected the LCD for gamers..
i hope. Smile<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Ummm... isn't the scaling worse than running at higher resolution w/o
FSAA and AF???<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

The scaling is very nice on the Hitachi, and games don't suffer from much
side-effects because most stuff is interpolated anyway (3d textures,
texturized fonts etc). What suffers from scaling is Windows GUI stuff,
mostly non-smoothed fonts, which look really horrible when scaling.

And replaced all with a CRT? If that is the case, the Hitachi was the best
TFT monitor of the bunch anyway???

The Hitachi is very bright, and I have had to lower contrast and brightness
around 15% by software. Backlight brightness is at 0 also. I also lowered
the blue component one notch more because the CML174 is kind of bluish.
