Post subject: Geforce4 TI-4200 problems
Archived from groups: comp>sys>ibm>pc>hardware>video (more info?)

In June I installed an Asus V9280TD card to replace a PNY card that had
a bad capacitor. As of last week, I've started noticing that text in
Explorer,
sometimes menu bars, desktop icon text etc, appears similar to a page
printed when low on ink. Sometimes a part of a character is missing here and
there etc. If I highlight the text, I can see the full characters in
reverse (usually, although sometimes that same missing text may appear
yellow.Another strange thing I noticed today is that sometimes if I drag a
square selection on the desktop and release it, there may be "residual"
pixels remaining from the selection.. almost as if it wasn't being refreshed
properly. I cleared out the oldest drivers and installed the latest
reference drivers, but that didn't make a difference. Anybody have an idea
what these symptoms are caused by?Might this be a system ram issue? I
restarted the computer today and there
was some rectangular red shapes on the post screen. The little box that
displays the progress just before desktop, "Preparing Network Connections"
etc, just had a thin strip visible. Instead of the usual blue background, it
was just black with only my mouse cursor visible. Finally reached desktop.

I open IE. The screen would flash on and off after trying to load Googles'
page. Literally, like the monitor lost signal for a split second. It would
sort of load partially, then freeze up for about 10 seconds, *flash*, a
little more loads but then it's frozen. Monitor lost signal for around 5
seconds.System was able to start up ok *after* I powered down and let it sit
for about 5minutes before boot. Sometimes, along with the text issues, there
will be a fewnarrow, vertical, dashed pinstripes visible when looking
websites. Sometimes scrollingthe page up or down will clear these visual
artifacts, tho it's just as likely thatwill also create some new "stray
pixels".

I'm not sure what the problem is, but I don't have another computer to test
the card on. I'm hoping someone in this group might recognize one of
these symptoms. Case is open with plenty of fresh circulation around the
card.I apologize for the lengthy post, but thank you for your time. Any help
would begreatly appreciated.

The last time this happened to me, I was running a Pentium 200 MMX, and the
L2 Cahce on the mainboard had failed... so good luck.

Hi Lee,
I also installed a Ti4200 card back in March, although mine is
manufactured by LeadTek I think. Been having kind of similar problems
in the last few weeks, not so much with IE, but the weird POST is very
familiar to me. I get vertical stripes of scrambled characters and
symbols, it's impossible to even make sense of the BIOS screens it's
that screwed up. This is all before WinXP even loads up, so I don't
think it can be a driver problem, right?

Doesn't seem to be an overheating issue either. I have read reports of
many other people with the same problem, all with 128MB Ti4200 cards,
and apparently it was something to do with faulty memory on the card.
A shame, since it was running beautifully for quite a few months...
Sad

I'm contacting the store where I bought it, and in the process of an
RMA right now.

Wow, interesting stuff. On Sunday, I replaced the card with a Radeon. So
far, all is better. It's kinda disappointing about the geforce though. Nice
card it was, for a while =/ Thanks for the input guys.

Interestingly, I made a post just yesterday regarding a problem I was
having with an ABIT version of the Ti4200 card with 128MB. At the
time I posted, I had not downloaded any recent posts, so did not see
this series of messages.

Although my symptoms are somewhat different, it sounds like they are
resulting from the same cause.

My problems are strictly with the text generation, when not running in
any of the Windows GUI modes. The worst appear when running pure DOS
programs, the text here is almost impossible to decipher. Yet the
text at BootUp, has hardly any flaws in it - weird, to me at least.
Now, with these other similar reports, I guess I'll dig out an old
retired video card to help resolve my issue.
