I haven't seen a benchmark that compares the new HD series with the X
series. I have an X1950XT. Is the 3879 faster than it?

It walks all over it.....here's a direct comparison of the HD3870 and the
X1950XT with others. It's in German, but the benchmarks are easy to follow.

Says the HD3850 beats the x1950xtx the HD3870 is even faster and gets
up towards 8800GT performance. An interesting pair of video cards.

I bought one to replace my x1950xt recently. Apart from the performance
gains and DX10 support, this new card is so much quieter.

re: this new card is so much quieter

Its about time! I have just returned an HD2900XT that is faulty. Now I don't
know what to do, I have seen benchmarks where the 3870 is about equal in
performance to the 2900, so, one of those or wait for this new fangled dual
core GPU? Aaaaaaaaarrrrgghhhhh!

Sounds even better. I had to buy a Zalman cooler for my X1950XT because the
stock fan was so noisy.

Why? 8800GT outperforms HD3870 and costs about the same. They are just
hard to find right now. Wait a month or so and they should be easier to buy.

I prefer the 2D quality of ATI cards.
I have been dissapointed with the 2D quality of the nVidia cards that I have
used in the past.

Especially considering the 8800gt has a performance advantage that
nobody but benchmark fanbois would consider mentioning. I agree with
you, the 2d quality makes up for it by miles. .

The 3870 is DX10.1 certified, the 8800 series is not. It runs cooler, draws
less power, and is a generation ahead of the 8800 series.

But does it perform better in the real world?
