Key Words: Microsoft UAA Bus Driver, HD Audio, KB888111, AD1988B, HDA
audio bus driver is required and not found, Windows XP SP2,
hdaudbus.sys

If you are trying to install the SoundMax High Definition Audio driver
for any variations of the Analog Devices Inc AD1988 chip under Windows
XP SP2 and nothing else works. Here is what fixed it for me.

Note - If you don't know what REGEDIT, KEYS and VALUES means, or any
of this sounds like geek to you - Do NOT try this method. You will
hoark up your machine even more.

1) Regedit and search for any occurances of "Soundmax", "UAA", "HD
Audio", "KB888111", and "Analog Devices". Delete the KEYs above any
values that contains one of these search terms.

2) Reboot. Do NOT let Windows install any new hardware.

3) Check Device Manager, you should have a Yellow/Exclamation unknown
PCI Device that wasn't there before. (It's the HDA Bus, but it won't
say that).

4) Download and run the HP patch SP33867, and the Intel fix
kb888111xpsp2.exe

6) Reboot. Let Windows autoinstall any new hardware.

7) Check Device Manager, you should have a Yellow/Exclamation "Audio
Device on High Definition Audio Bus ..." that wasn't there before.

Cool Download and run the SoundMax install package designed for your
brand/configuration. e.g. HP SP37155, ASUS AD1988B_2KXP_51014580, etc.

-) If either of the above installs says it can't find hdaudbus.sys,
browse to c:\windows\system32.

I still had to go to the Device Manager and make an Update Driver for
the PCI Device with a yellow question mark.
But after that i could finally install my audio card and also my
modem.

You can get this error for any number of reasons, and there are dozens
of possible solutions online. The only one that worked for me (found
after 5 hours of searching and trying everything) was the one at the
bottom of this page. It seems to be for xp sp3, but who knows where it
might work

Basically you download http://www.9covers.com/files/HDA%20AddOn%20For%20XP%20SP3.zip,
install it in the device manager (it may prompt you for a CD, ignore
that and navigate directly to hdaudio.sys) and you're golden. I hope
this saves other people the aggravation I went through
