I just bought an HP Photosmart Digital Camera model M547. This 6.2 MP
model was just replaced with an 8 MP model so it was on sale. My old
camera was a 3mp and took excellent pictures (till it died), so I dont
need 8mp.

However, the camera came with an install CD which has all the
photo-editing software (which I dont need), and the USB drivers.
I tried to install the drivers for Win98se and found the CD only has
software for XP and above. I went to the HP website to download the
Win98 drivers and got a message saying they no longer support Win98,
WinME, or Win2K.

The camera itself seems to work fine, and easily. However, if I can
not download the pictures to my computer, they can keep the damn
thing. Tomorrow I am returning it.

Does anyone know which digital camera brands still support Win98? It
does little good to have a camera that cant transfer the files to a
computer, and I am not going to upgrade to XP just because HP will no
longer support Win98, particularly when I despise and hate XP.

If these companies refuse to help ALL their customers, then I refuse
to do business with them. After all, how difficult is it to make a
few drivers available on their website...... I dont care if their
photo editing software dont work. There is always Photoshop and
others, but if they cant at least offer a driver, screw em'.

I just hope the photos I put on my SD card will work when I buy
another brand of camera so I do not lose all of them. They were taken
of our newborn baby. Does anyone know if they will work and remain on
the card when I do find a camera that accepts Win98?

Thanks

George

I agree that it is frustrating that something as simple as a Windows 98
driver is generally no longer provided. However, I am not sure that you can
blame manufacturers completely for no longer supporting an operating system
that was discontinued 8 years ago.

Although my main computer is Windows XP, I do still occasionally use an old
laptop that was given to me that is running Windows 98SE. I like to be able
to hook up my various USB devices to it. Generally there are no drivers
provided anymore, even for card readers.

I suggest that you go to this link:

http://www.technical-assistance.co.uk/kb/usbmsd98.php

and follow the instructions and download and install the program. If your
camera supports the USB mass storage protocol, as many do, it should work
with no problem. If not, then an inexpensive card reader should work,
whether it comes with Windows 98SE drivers or not.

I am assuming you have Windows 98 S(econd) E(dition). If you are still
running first edition, then you are out of luck, unless you can find an
upgrade disk.

Get a usb camera card reader.
Or stick with a 1.5MP camera to go with your primitive mimicry of an operating
system.

Or join the 21st century and at least move up to windows 2000.

My old camera, an Olympus 3mp had a Smart Media card and it came with
a card reader. I tried to use that thing and it wont read the SD
cards. How can someone get a SD card reader? I dont like using the
camera anyhow to download, it just wastes the batteries.

As far as Windows 2000, it is also no longer supported by this HP
camera. I am not willing to spend $1000 or more to buy a new computer
just to satisfy HP with their lack of drivers, and in all honesty, if
I had to use Windows XP or Vista, I'd get a Macintosh computer, or
give up computers entirely. I absolutely hate XP, plus this 1000mhz
PIII would probably not handle it anyhow. I got a computer to go
online, do word processing, and view my photos. Windows 98SE works
just fine for these things. I dont need all these high powered
computers and the latest OSs that are only made for people that play
games and want their computer to watch movies. I dont play games and
I have a TV for movies.

I'm still running the same installation of Win98 that I installed in
1998, transferred to 4 different computers since then. Everyone I
know that uses XP has to reinstall it every couple years, if a virus
dont wipe them out first. I dont need those hassles. Win98 has
become pretty safe from virus attacks and it's still the most stable
OS ever made by MS. Why would I want to install troubles and
problems, when I dont need all that power. It's just these companies
like HP that think we are all loaded with money and we all need power.

The same way you get most things...you buy it.
Any store that sells camera supplies sells them. Or try:

Ever try a Dazzle card reader? They work well with the smart media cards if
you get a multi card reader it will take the SD card too.
