After about 15 minutes of game playing, my PC turns off. Even with the
case wide open and all fans on.

I have replaced the thermal paste on my GPA cooler. I have run stress
tests on my CPU, it seems to be doing fine. (55c under load) What else
could it possibly be?

My system
1.86GHz Core 2 Duo (ninja fanless) / 2GB ram / Geforce 7950GT 512MB
(Zalman Copper) / Hiper 530W / 12cm fan x2 / Asus mobo

Nothing overclocked. All drivers up to date. PC just dies and
restarts. No warning, nothing.
All temps are within operating range when the PC goes dead. (Graphics
card at 53c last time the PC went dead. 38c when idle)

Ran Prime95 for 1 hour 40 mins, no errors.
CPU burn in for 1 hour, no errors.

CPU 43c when idle. 55c under load.

It powered off after 20 minutes or so of Call of Duty 4. About the
same length of time for my old (1998) RTS game.

What system? What game? Which video card? What drivers? What m/b, processor,
video card, memory, psu, OS? Overclocked? Shuts off? As in it closes the
game and goes to the "Windows is shutting down" screen, or just reboots
during gameplay. Or just straight out powers down with no warning, and does
not reboot?

Zero details posted means zero relevant advice.

Since you can run Prime95 without problem and crashes in 3D games, it is
most likely the video card. Run ATI Tool and lower the GPU clock speed to
see if fixes to trouble shoot. Swap with diferent card or put in different
computer to test. See if you can still RMA the video card if bad. The new
ATI HD 3870 DirectX 10.1 cards just came out and are reasonably priced as it
may be time to consider new card.

I did lower all the sliders dramatically, and the picture suddenly
became very... "bitty" - kind of distortion.
Is that expected? I'm not really sure what to lower it to.

What's RMA?

Spontaneous rebooting during heavy 3D load without overclocking leads me to
suspect your 7950GT card with the aftermarket cooler. Why did you install
it? Are you 100% certain it's installed with 100% contact to the GPU? Did
you buy it used this way? Is the card running at the correct speeds for
core/memory? I've run across "improved" BIOS flashes in used cards that
caused instabilty...550/700(1400) is stock.

I've experienced something very similar with my P5N32-E SLI that I got a
few weeks ago.
Upgrading to the just recently released beta-BIOS 3xxx solved this
problem. And make sure NOT to install the Mainboard-drivers from the CD.
I think they are at fault for the system crashes. After I upgraded the
BIOS the PCI-bridge and other hardware-components were reported as being
new and Windows stock-drivers have been installed instead of the ASUS
ones. Also install the most recent Graphics-drivers.

Regards,

Daniel

Too high video card GPU frequency leads to crashing. Too high memory speed
leads to visual problems. Lowering frequency should make better not worse. A
RMA is where your request to return card to manufacturer so they fix the
card under warranty. What manufacture is the card? eVGA, XFX, and BFG all
offer lifetime warranty. Most others offer one year.

Generally it is good to wrap everything up by telling what fixed the
problem. That way, when others with same problem search for solution , it
will be available. It also helps for awarding status points to the poster
with the best answers.

Ditto......... I keep a database of stuff like that so that I can possibly
help someone else down the road if I see that particular problem again.
Please post your fix for us and for others who may have that problem later.
It is a feather in your cap too..........Smile

Well you get status points for caring about the group. As for what
fixed the problem, I would have said so if I had known. I am putting
it down to my Skythe Ninja cooler coming loose (1 of the push pins was
broken), which caused the CPU to overheat. Although I don't actually
have any evidence of this.
Other possibility is static damage caused some problems.... (even
though it just started working fine again)... other possibility, GPU
fan speed was too low and I forgot to increase it while playing games.
