Hello all,
OK, I know I'm talking about apples & oranges but I would like some
guidance.
I am looking for a digital camera and although I like the G5 in terms of
price and size, I do like the faster shutter speeds and flexible lens
options on the Rebel. I was looking though a digital photo magazine and
they had listed accessory lenses for the G5. How good are such lenses?
Thanks for your help

Nah, you need to be able to compare apples to oranges before you realize
they're different!

The lenses are more like Teleconverters or Macro Lenses, nothing in the
league of the Rebel.
If you want true lens flexiblity, go for the Rebel (or a Nikon D70). If
you want an advanced point and shoot camera, get the G5.
Another possiblity is the new Canon Pro1. In terms of features, it's an
advanced G5.

You should also take a look at the new Minolta Dimage A2:

But if you can afford it, I say go for Rebel or a Nikon D70 - those
cameras will give you much more flexibility!

I don't have the G5, I have the G2. The accessory lenses work well for
me so far, but a friend who had the same didn't like them (or more to
the point, didn't like having to use an adapter). However, they will not
give you the range of focal lengths that an SLR camera and its lenses
would give you.

The G5 was/is not a good camera, it has a lot of purple fringing
it is imo too slow to use in any candid shooting situation, like
all/most digicams. I just do not like digicams in general, mostly
because they don't give you the creative fredom that dslr's do,
to use selective focusing - so please ignore my objections if you
do not care about decicive moment and selective focus - purple
fringe it seems does'nt bother most people. ;o)-max-<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Help me choose between the Canon G5 and the Rebel |

I just wanted to say thank you for everyone who responded. As you could
tell, I don't know much about photography but plan on studying it as a
serious hobby. NONE of the responses I received were unkind or
condescending. I really appreciate the feedback.
THANK YOU SO MUCH

Sounds like a more flexible option - I have a 10D, hubby just got a Rebel so
we can share lenses <g> The new Powershot Pro 1 looks and sounds fantastic
though ... the L lens really is attractive, but no way can we justify having
one!

Purple fringing seeems a prob with most digicams. I have the G5 and pic
quality is good. Only complaint is the usual with non-slr cams, delay
between pressing shutter button and pic. For quick shots and sports photos,
slr is the way to go. Can't afford a digi slr so will stick with my Pentax,
but the G5 in most normal situations is fine.
