Post subject: Help needed for video editing system
Archived from groups: comp>sys>ibm>pc>hardware>video (more info?)

Hello everyone.

I have to build a "strong" PC for a friend which he is going to use for
amateur video editing and archiving (copying VHS and similar tapes to DVD
etc.) He will also be capturing and editing video from VCRs (he has a
digital one and wife an older analog version). He probably will also want a
TV tuner card to record some stuff.

Now, I have asked the newsgroups for video card brands. Although people
there have given valuable input, I lack the general knowledge on what a
"good working" system for these purposes needs to include, and was not able
to reach a conclusion. I will appreciate any pointers you can give me and of
course, all product-based direct suggestion is thankfully accepted.

As always, we would like to get the best price-performance ratio too Smile))

Many thanks in advance.

Have you tried rec.video.desktop? You may also find useful information at
<http://www.avsforum.com> and <http://www.dvdrhelp.com>.
<http://www.videoguys.com> is a reseller but they also have information on
their site that might be helpful for you.

Doing video stuff, you'll need the fastest processor, FSB and disk
access you can get. Rendering to the final AVI can take a long time.
Most agree that SATA harddrives in a RAID 0 configuration is a very
fast disk access. A mobo with dual memory banks is also recommended.
As to the video card: the best are mostly for gaming, fast textures
and fast frame rates; don't need this for video editing, though you'll
need a video capture device. You go with ATI all-in-wonders, with
video capture on video card, or go with seperate device.
