Post subject: Help with problems when decreasing multiplier
Archived from groups: alt>comp>hardware>overclocking>amd (more info?)

Hi there,

Just mounted a new system:

A7N8X-E Deluxe
AMD XP2800+
Gefore3Ti200
2x3200 256 ELIXIR (Retail)
Stock Cooler + Case Cooler
PSU 400W Q-TEC Dual Fan

Started trying some OCing and I get up to 182x2 FSB with great
stability (default multiplier). From 183 I get unstability. At this
settings everything works like a charm!

So far everything is more or less normal... however, here is the
question that kills me:

My obvious goal is to get as close to 400FSB therefore I try to lower
the multiplier but even at same settings (or at default 166) as soon
as I decrease the multiplier (even one notch) the system wont post!!!

This is really killing me since I don't understand why lowering the
multiplier can be worse!... PLEASE HELP Razz

In any case I'm very happy with the rig and I might stay with stock
fan for a while.

Any comment is welcome!
Cheers

JL

It's because the multiplier is locked on the CPU, and so far there is no
way to unlock it. You would have been better off with the XP2500+,
since it has a lower multiplier.

At least itīs locked at 12.5 :p LOL

Any hint on how to get higher FSB with my current hw? BTW which
kind of memory settings do you recommend?

TIA

Can't see anyway to go higher with the FSB unless you try increasing the
CPU core voltage. That may get you higher.
Memory timings, since you're underclocking it, can probably be set at
CAS 2.0, 2,2,6 or 3,3,7 if that doesn't work.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Don;t know much about your RAM, check the manufacturers website, or the
documentation that came with it and set it to that. It's rated to 200MHz so
you should be fine.

It could be that the CPU just doesn't like 200MHz FSB, coax it with a little
more voltage, but I suggest you install and configure MBM5 and check the CPU
DIODE temp is sane, especially if you start upping the voltage. Go easy
with it (one notch at a time is best)

You will need memtest 86 to check stability of RAM and Prime95 Torture test
to check stability of CPU. Any errors at all and it is unstable. Best to
run each for an hour minimum to check final stability. 5 minutes is
probably enough when increasing speeds slowly. If one or other is unstable,
you can increase the voltage, provided temps are sane, bear in mind that you
have no idea what temp your RAM is. I would suspect that you can get away
with 2.8V in a cool case without worry, but as always with overclocking,
it's a risk you are taking.

Thank you guys for your help. Will try and let you know.

How high can I go with the CPU core?

Any other hint on how to push some extra steps on the FSB will be
more than welcome :p

I should have bought the 2600!!! What an idiot Smile lol

Ben,

I've read a lot of people in this group with configs like mine (or
worse) that get easily to 200 FSB... I think I cannot make it further
tan 183 (looks like my cheap RAM is the guilty although it's
PC3200)...

Do you think that 182 FSB is a decent OC? Or should I try to find a
way to get more juice out of my rig... (I'm kinda dissapointed)

TIA

XP 2500+ on my A7N8X Deluxe will not go much beyond that either... it's also
very hot at over 60°C loaded, and that's at default voltage. I'm using
Arctic Silver 3 and a huge chunk of copper so there's no explaining it.

My RAM is happy at 220MHz 7-2-2-2 (Corsair TwinX1024-3200LL). My only
thoughts are that the CPU just doesn't like a high FSB... must have been one
that failed the 3200+ grade (rather than just not being tested).

I'm reluctant to try much higher voltage than default due to the temps, but
I have completed a test of Aquamark3 at 220MHz FSB (although Prime95 fails
almost immediately at that speed) with some rather nice scores, but temps
exceeding 70°C. I think the multiplier was 10.5 to give a little over
2.3GHz. I generally run at stock though, just don't need the speed... been
running all games at 1600x1200 full detail without problems.

One day I'll get round to doing some more thorough testing to determine if
it's FSB, total clock, voltage or heat that is limiting the CPU.
