I am having some boot issues with a system I began building last
night. Here are the specs:
Gigabyte 8KNXP
P4 3.0 ghz 800 FSB
Corsair TwunX XMS 3200 (4 x 512 (DIMM 1/4 and DIMM 2/5))
ATI Raedon 9700 Pro
Plextor 52/32/52
Sony DRU510A DVD
Quantum 12 gig IDE (master)
Western Digital 120 gig (slave)
The hard drives came out of my old system, and still have their NTFS
partitons. WinXp Pro is installed on the master drive. Booting for
the first time, everything started off good, I smacked Del and went
into bios. All four IDE devices were being detected. I proceded to
shut of SATA and Raid and i don't intend on using them for a couple
more months. After making these minor adjusments, making sure that
memory and processor were deteced properly, but leaving their
configurations in the default settings, I saved and re-booted.
The system comes up to BIOS, tests the memor, detects the hard drives.
It then comes up to 'Windows detected and error at earlier shutdown,
do use with to safe mode, or normal', I select normal, it proceeds
for about 5-10 seconds and reboots. I can keep this cycle going all
night if I wanted too. Safe mode also results in the same thing.
I tried booting from a WinXP CD to re-install Xp on top of itself and
this fails. It proceeds through the opening setup screens, detecting
things, however when it appears to start the actual install, I get a
blue screen of death type telling me that it detected some sort of
problem. It gets a STOP error message with what appears to be a bunch
of hex codes.
I have tried removing hardware several times trying to find the
source. I've removed one or both CD/DVD drives. I've removed the WD
slave drive, and changed the jumper on the Quantum for single drive.
There are no PCI cards installed.
Nothing seems to work. I've begun to run out of hair to pull! I
neglected to write down the BIOS version before coming to friends
house for internet access... sorry. The one thign I have not done is
try to boot from floopy. No floopy drive installed yet. Off to pick
one up now to try that out.
Thanks in advnace for any suggestions, and sorry to have made this
sooo long. >> Stay informed about: Help with new system problems 8KNXP |

Hi Gordon,
sorry, bet you have to do a fresh install after format c: ...
I'm sure, that will solve it.

Maybe set all the memory timings to slowest - press ctrl-f1 whilst in the
bios to give you the extra advanced menu. Then take them off spd and set
them to slowest - see if yah install works then - then try increasing them
if successful - also try the newer bios versions floating around f6b or
higher now most likely.
Let us know how you get on.

Tom and Brad:
Thanks for your posts. I appreciate them more than you will ever
know.
Unfortunatley I am still unable to get anywhere.
Tom, the only problem with what you suggested is that I am not able to
access the hard drivce in any fashion. It's as though it's not being
assisgned a drive letter or something. Same goes for the CD drives.
Yes, I am able to boot from CD, however the boot menu created on this
does not have an option to simply exit to prompt. It does have the
ability to load Partition Magic into a RAM drive, which I do and it
detects the hard drive no problem. When I exit PMagic, it takes my to
drive letter R:, the RAM drive, but I am ubale to change to any other
drive letter. As I mention, I picked up a floppy and this doesn't
work at all. The drive light is just on all the time, and does not
read the floppy. It's detected in BIOS, and set as the first boot
option. Still no luck. I'm starting to wonder if perhaps there is a
physical problem with the mainboard itself??? I sent my original note
to Gigabyte support, but they've yet to respond. Not sure where the
support note went and if they'll be observing the 4th holiday weekend.
I hope not!!!
Brad, I tried your suggestion, hovever I still can't seem to find the
panel your mentioning. Hitting CTRL-F1 from the BIOS menu results in
essentially a refresh of the main BIOS menu. Going through the BIOS
screens I am unable to find anything similar to what you have
described below. The BIOS version is F5.
Any further suggestions that you guys could provide would be grest.
Thanks, Gordon

If I understand you correctly, you boot the XP installed for the previous
PC.
This rarely works as Windows customizes itself to the underlying hardware,
especially to the motherboard. Just changing the m/b already comes down to a
full re-install.
You changed the whole PC ........
There is a way to avoid a full re-install but that is though.
See MS article
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314082
It will be easier and give you a more stable system to do a full re-install,
despite the work.

I assume the CD-rom was linked to IDE3 or 4 (Raid controller).
It seems you ran into the same problem I had with a different GBT board.
When booting from a CD-rom hooked to IDE 3 or 4 (even with F6 & special ATA
drv),
the Setup prog looses track of it's boot device and crashes with a
0x0000007B error.
Workaround: hook CD-rom to IDE1 or 2 and install from there.
When done, move CD-rom to IDE3 or 4.

Thanks for the tips. I was able to get the system up finally,
although it's not stable. I installed XP to the 120 gig drive. From
there I was able to access the old Quantum drive by using an IDE to
SATA converter. This allowed to get the data off the drive.
Although I was able to boot the system, it's not stable. I am unable
to boot the system with all 4 512meg DIMMs installed. I've tried
various memory settings in the BIOS recommened from different support
boards and nothing works. At this point I could only get it to boot
using 1 DIMM and even then the system is prone to rebooting ever 30
mins or so.
At this point, I've determined that Corsair memory and Gigabyte don't
like each other. They just don't want to play nice. I'm currently
waiting on my RMA and taking the 15% restock fee hit in the wallet and
replacing them with Kingston which appear to be recommened by
Gigabyte.
Hopfully this will clear up the stability problems.
Thanks for all the help.

Wel..on my 8INXP i have two Corsair TwinX 2x256 modules running a SPD
timings and not a hint of a problem.
I belive that these 8KNXP boards are all from a bad batch or you just have
to get lucky and get a good board.
Loads of people sweated when the 8INXP came out...i never encountered one
problem, lucky i guess. >> Stay informed about: Help with new system problems 8KNXP |
