Its your most likely your stock cooling and 55C is not bad that type of
cooling. If you want lower temps you will need a better heatsink and fan.

and the case airflow will need to be good enough to evacuate the heat that
comes off the CPU...

Hi,

55°C for a stock XP2500+ temp is not great, considering that it's got just
1.65v going through the chip. This leaves no room for overclocking. Just
two weeks ago I built a system using XP2400+ (Retail HSF) and the AN7. I
overclocked the T-Bred CPU to 2.2GHz using 1.85vCore and the load temps were
57°C, (SYS temp is 24°C).

What are the remps of your sys?. If you could bring them down, then your
whole PC will run cooler. . .

I am in Australia, and it's summer of course and no air-con, so mine is
always around 50C (stock cooler, and the case well ventilated).
Wouldn't mind some input on a reasonably priced CPU fan to replace the AMD
one though.
Not OCed at the moment, but I hope to soon.
