Hello, All:

Just purchased a second-hand IBM Model M keyboard, 42H1292, after reading
about them at Dan's Data. Dan mentions two models on his web site, my
42H1292 and the 1391401. He states that the sole difference between the two
is the connector: the 42H1292 is for machines equipped with a PS/2 keyboard
port, and the 1391401 is for machines equipped with an AT-style DIN port.

I can confirm that my 42H1292 has a PS/2 connector, but I also notice a few
other differences between it and a 1391401 that I have access to. The
42H1292 has a slightly larger footprint, I think, as well as a cord that is
permanently attached at the keyboard end. The '92 is also a fair bit louder
than the '01 and the switches feel 'different' in a way that I can't really
quantify. I believe that the keys are of different sizes as well, and I am
certain that the lettering is different (and off-center on a few of the
42H1292's function keys). Finally, the '92 was made in the U.K. whilst the
'01 was screwed together here at home.

Am I correct in my assumption that the 1391401 is actually the better of the
two 'boards?

Thanks,
Scott

<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.clickykeyboard.com/buyersguide.htm" target="_blank">http://www.clickykeyboard.com/buyersguide.htm</a> (a virtual shrine to
IBM keyboards) says:
"IBM model 42H1292 is also a relatively common IBM model M keyboard. It
has a permanently attached keyboard cable and has slightly poorer
build-quality vs. a 1391401 keyboard. but it still has mechanical
keyswitches and is much better than 95% of new "rubber dome" keyboards
produced today."<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Thank you, Snowbat. Will keep my eyes peeled for a 1391401.

Scott,

I found a second hand dealer here in Sydney who had a whole box of Model
M's!!

I took 6!! Actually, 2 of them were Lexmark made, which
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.clickykeyboard.com" target="_blank">http://www.clickykeyboard.com</a> thinks are not as good. So I used these for
the missing keycaps on the others. I ended up with 4 perfect boards, one of
which I am typing on now. Noisy bliss! I've just finished washing all of the
keycaps and cleaning them, and they are now "as new". Woohoo!!

Anyway, when I told him (Charles) that the 'boards are worth a bit more than
I paid, he put one up on ebay....

<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5196477863&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1" target="_blank">http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5196477863&rd=1&...agename</a>

Still no bids at AU$20, which is a bargain. I think he has a few more as
well... might want to email him if interested.

Regards,
Saul

By the way, the one I was really hoping to find was the 1395300, which has
the same mechanicals but takes up a lot less space. Does anyone know where I
can find one in Australia? I think they came with old IBM PS/1 systems, so I
don't expect there to be thousands of them.... pity....

For anyone interested, I have written a fairly long page on my web site
about my newfound keyboard passion...
