Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard>abit (more info?)

I just put together a new IC7-G using Win XP-Pro. But the onboard lan
device will not start. In the device section of windows I get the
message "This device can not start (code 10) above that it says PCI
bus 3 Device 1 function 0. I have unstalled the device in the Device
section. Windows finds it on a reboot and installs software which it
says goes fine, but then says the device will not start. I have also
installed the driver from the supplies disk (dit that first really)
with the same result.

I have a secone IC7-G machine here and it uses PCI bus 2. I don't
think that means much though. Anyway has anyone had any problems with
the on-board land device. I guess I will have to REM it back, just
got it 3 days ago from NewEgg.

Thanks

Gary

Was the ethernet controller enabled when you installed Windows, or did you
enable it after installation? I've seen a few instances where the CSA
controllers won't install properly unless they are enabled during the
initial OS setup, so if this applies to you, try a WinXP "repair" install.

Have you tried the latest drivers available from Intel's website?

Thanks Richard.

I tried reinstalling the OS with SP1 and a slipstreamed version of SP2
several times with different Bios settings. I tried the drivers in
windows and the latest ones from Intel and of course the ones on the
supplied board software. They all could find the NIC but they all
said there was a problem and the device would not start. What I noted
as odd was when the OS installed it found 2 firewire adapters. I
tried a reload of the OS with the firewire off in the Bios and it
still found one Firewire. Finally had firewire off and the NIC off
and the OS still found a firewire adapter, even setup a lan for it.

In the end I gave up and got a RMA from NewEgg. I submitted it by
E-Mail and got a response with an RMA number in under an hour. aybe
faster, did not check my E-Mail.

Hi Tom:

I had a modem card at first. I then took it out leaving no PCI cards
at all. I had a Video card, a floppy drive, a CD and one hard serial
drive. Needed the CD to install the OS on the hard drive. I did up
the Bios to 27 when I had the problem. Yes I powered down the system
and disconnected it from power to clear the cmoss.

Thanks for stopping by Tom.

Hi All:

I was out of town for a bit. It took almost 2 weeks to get the new
mother board over X-Mas. But it is up and running fine. Delivered
the system to my wife tonight. What is real strange is the temps the
CPU is running. My 2.8 runs in the 39 to 44 C range at idle and goes
up to 61 under stress. at 55 the CU fan goes to full speed. The new
3.2 Northwood runs much cooler 29 to law 30's at idle and I have not
been able to get it over agout 47 C under stress. The cpu fan never
goes to full speed. Have they changed to temp sensor on the 3.2? The
Board and power supply temps are about the same between the two
machines.

At any rate the on board NIC now works. Nice system.

Thanks for all the comments.

Gary

My 3.2 cpu is around 39-45 at Idle and around 61-65 under stress I know it
maybe a bit hot but I have a adjustable cpu fan speed to make things
cool....During the winter its 29-35 and 56-60 under stress.... I have a ABIT
IC7 MAX 3 board

Its hot at the moment as we are in our summer here in NZ ??

'Sounds' like quite reasonable cpu emps. "C" assumed.

Currently looking at lows of 0_deg F , +\- 10_def F ... for the week.
"NE" ... USofA.
Sweltering Heat Wave tomorrow afternoon ... 30_deg F.

I have a good friend who lives half way up the side of the volcano,
North Island.
Nah.
