Post subject: IC7-MAX3 unable to boot
Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard>abit (more info?)

I'm having trouble getting my IC7-MAX3 to boot into windows after
re-installing XP. The install process will finish all its processes
(copying files, installing hardware), on the first reboot (after the GUI
install part) it will show the XP splash screen for a second, show a
BSOD, and reboot. I have attempted to format, (full) run through the
install process again, same result. I'm using a custome XP cd, with SP2,
and slipstreamed RAID drivers (this has worked in the past without a
issue). I have tired to boot into safe mode, no change. I'm looking for
some advise.

the machine is:
IC7-MAX3
p4 3ghz HT/800mhz FSB
corsair XMS-twin PC3200 1gb (dual channel with two 512 sticks)
420Watt PSU
ATI all-in-wonder radeon 9700 pro
Hitachi 80g SATA drive
lasteast bios

I have tired the following:
different PSU - same result (good coolermaster 600watt psu)
different ram - same result
different hard drive (sata), same result
different hard drive (pata), same result
different video card, same result
re-flashed bios, same result
cleared cmos - same result

I have ran out of ideas, I have basicaly tired everything expect
different processor/motherboard.

This board was working fine, had a issue with a hard drive was failing
had to re-install. previously the drives where setup in raid 1.

Thanks
Jeff

Increase your DDR voltage in BIOS. I have the same board and at the default
RAM voltage, the board is unstable, but with the voltage increases by .2 -
..3 volts, all is fine.

DDR voltage to 2.70 at least. what controller is the hard drive on, SATA?
regular IDE?

just tired DDR to 2.7+ set it all the way up to 3.2 no change. The hard
drive is connected to the onboard intel SATA controller, I have tired both
IDE, and SATA, same result, but did not try DDR voltage setting with IDE,
keep in mind this machine was working fine without issue for over 2 years,
with his configuration (never changed DDR settings). taken everything out of
the machine, expect HD, video, no change.

sounds like you are using the SATA controller, either the Intel or the SI.
are you hitting F6 to signal to install the raid driver during the early
stages of the XP install?

you indicated on an email that you are using a slipstreamed copy of XP with
the Intel SATA Raid driver installed... not sure what version of SATA
driver you are using in that slipstream but I would try using a
non-slipstreamed copy and the newest release of the driver from Intel.

I'd probably go so far as to first clear the CMOS using the jumper and be
sure to have all power removed from the system. it sounds like something
that is stored in the bios settings for installed devices is conflicting
with the current installation you are trying to accomplish.

To Whoever,

Only as a last resort.....go into the bios and "Load Fail-Safe Properties", and take
it from there.....all else fails....your other choices are: remove fan/heatsink,
clean/replace compound, lift lever up and down a time or two, or replace CPU.

"Just a Note"....Intel P4's will always run a bit hot, as I have a 3.0 on my IC7-G,
and a Intel Celeron 2.7 on my second IC7-G, which runs a lot cooler

If all that you've tried failed....go RMA!

Yup, did that tonight, disabled everything in BIOS but what it needs to
boot.
I dont think its the fan/heatsink, if it was, it would fail during install,
but it fails after install, very first boot after install it fails. I
have reinstalled a couple times with this machine never had been issue.

I don't really understand what its problem is.. was working fine

To Whoever,

I don't want to appear stupid, but since you seem to have been able to get into the
bios, then I'd hate to suggest, that you may have lost your boot record, and getting
that back can be one pain in the ass!

As a last resort here, and you've nothing of interest previously loaded onto the
computer, and you mention reinstall fails, re_fdisk, partition, format....if it fails
again, could be a bad drive.

However, all I can suggest as a last.....try, bare boning the computer, run with
none, or one memory chip at a time, reseat chips. From here, it could be a number
of things, reseat/check connections, bulging or festering caps....etc....

Gotta' go now, way past my bed time!!!!!
